USA Volleyball Chesapeake Region
Candidates for the Board of Directors - 2005
If you are interested in becoming a CHRVA Board Member, please check out the Election Process.  Your nomination must be received by the Chair of the Nominations and Elections Committee by February 1, 2005 to be included on the Official Candidate Slate.  If, by the deadline, there are still more available seats than candidates, nominations will be accepted from the floor during the Annual General Membership Meeting.

The official slate of candidates will be closed as of February 1, 2005.

The following tables provide information about the individuals seeking election to the CHRVA Board of Directors for the year 2005.  Both tables specify whether or not the candidate is currently on the Board (Incumbent) and presents some personal comments as a means of introduction. The tables will be updated as additional candidates come forward.

This year, the Chesapeake Region will continue to make exclusive use of mail-in ballots to determine which candidates will be selected to fill the open seats on the Board of Directors.  Instructions and official ballots are included in the April 2005 Digs Newsletters that are addressed to CHRVA members.  Your votes determine the composition of the body that will make all of this Region's decisions. We urge you to get involved in Region operations at the most basic level by returning your completed election ballot by the deadline.

The Official Candidate Slate is a table that identifies all candidates who have met the nomination requirements specified in the CHRVA Bylaws by the February 1, 2005 deadline.

If you have any questions about the candidates or the process, please feel free to contact our Nominations and Elections Chair, Dennis Moore, at dennis.moore@chrva.org or (301)218-9131 (home).

Lisa Bliss
I played for Dixie Collins and Charles Ezigbo when NOVA was called Fairfax Volleyball. My last few years of high school I played for Dean Shumway at NVVA. I went on to play Division III at Mary Baldwin College in Staunton, VA. Last year I got into coaching and coached the NVVA Fairfax 16B team. It was my first year and quite the challenge!

Last summer I attended CAP I.  I was the assistant coach at McLean H.S. last fall. Volleyball is a real passion for me; I enjoy making this a great experience for the players and their families. Currently I am assistant coach to the Select 17 team at NVVA as well as a Director of the Support Division at NVVA.

Julie Briggs
I have been involved with Chesapeake activities for several years now. I have served as the WAA and the WBB/B Division Coordinator; coordinated the AAVO Fellowships; rated scorekeeper candidates; have taught scorekeeper recertification clinics; and most recently served as the Vice President whose primary role is to plan and execute the Regional Championships. I was also part of the Task Force that developed the Adult Division Split Pilot Program.  So far most feedback has been positive and I hope that we can further improve that program.

I play and team rep for two adult women’s teams and rep for my husband’s team as well. I also serve as the club director for one of the larger adult clubs (9 teams). We have hosted many tournaments over the years including two Fellowships and 13 tournaments during the 2005 season.

I have worn many hats and can offer several different prospectives while working with the Board, including player, team rep, volunteer, official, and tournament host.  My personal goal while working on the Board is to develop better communication with the membership so that your voice will be heard at Board meetings. I hope that we can provide more surveys and focus groups and other mechanisms for you to speak out, so that we can develop new programs and improve existing programs to serve our diverse and ever-changing membership.

Steve Burinsky
I have been an active participant in the Chesapeake Region since the mid-1980’s. During that time, I have played in the Men’s B, Men’s BB, and Men’s A Divisions and have served as the team representative for several seasons. Since the late 1980’s, I have been certified and active as a referee in good standing, working regularly as a non-playing referee and rating provisional referee candidates at fellowship and regular-season tournaments. I am currently certified as a USA National Referee.

Over the past six years as a Director, I have served as Vice President, with primary responsibility for the Regional Championships, and Eligibility Chair, with primary responsibility for resolving issues with respect to team and individual eligibility. I have also managed CHRVA’s email presence at CHRVA.org and edited the CHRVA Handbook.

Professionally, I am an electrical engineer with 25 years of experience. I hold a Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering from Drexel University and a Master of Science Degree in Communications Theory from the George Washington University.

I look forward to continuing my service to the membership of the Chesapeake Region.

Lisa DiGiacinto
I have been a member of the Chesapeake region since 1982. I have had the opportunity to be a part of our volleyball community in many different capacities. I started out as an adult player. I then began coaching in the junior program and I am still very active in this aspect of volleyball.

I feel I have a very thorough knowledge of the challenges in our region and am able to look at issues from various points of interest. I would like the opportunity to continue the commitment to the Chesapeake region and at the National level. I have spent many years promoting volleyball in our region and would like to continue my volunteer efforts. I feel that I can serve the region to make this the best region in which to play volleyball.
Charles Ezigbo
After competing in my primary sports, basketball and tennis, most of my volleyball playing days were concentrated in the early to mid 90’s. Since retiring from actively playing, I currently devote my time to volleyball through officiating, coaching, and in my dedication to the various administrative activities in the Region.  Driven by an internal passion for volleyball, I have been involved with most aspects of the sport, both on a Regional and National level. My National experience, along with my professional background, has proven to be extremely instrumental in my current and past contributions to the Region, as outlined in the following list of accomplishments.

Fred Mehl
I have been involved with volleyball for over 20 years, mostly as a high school referee and now in USAV Juniors program. I am currently the AAVO Treasurer and NVVA Administrator. As the administrator for this region’s largest club, I would like to be part of the team that helps shape the direction that will make this the best region in the USAV system. On top of my administrative and treasurer duties my greatest joy comes from coaching and working with the youth of Northern Virginia. I have been coaching the past 3 years. I never was much of a skill player but I was told by a fellow-coach, “if you can’t be the biggest star on the court, be the player with the biggest heart and dedication.” The advice I leave with my players is “love to win....but first love to play.”

I feel that as a member of the Board, I would bring practical experience that would help the Region understand the obstacles clubs face trying to run their organizations. I have seen volleyball grow at an amazing rate in this area and would like to see it improve in areas where we trail other regions.

John Teifer
I have been playing and coaching volleyball for over 25 years.

As a USVBA player of 16 seasons I have played at the AA, A, and BB level, playing in three USVBA National Championships (AA), and for six regional champions (2-AA, 3-A, 1-BB) in four different regions. As a coach I have been successful at the high school level coaching The Bishop’s School to the 1993 California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) State Finals, and Our Lady of Peace HS to the 1994 & 1995 San Diego section-CIF regional finals. I recently was hired as the Lake Braddock Secondary School (Fairfax,VA) varsity coach.

My college experience includes a six-year (1983-1988) tenure as Head Coach at LIU-Southampton College where my squad obtained a 161 – 50 (NCAA II) record and five straight top 10 regional rankings, including two appearances in the ECAC finals. While at Southampton I also started a very successful Southampton College men’s program.

As a junior coach, I was a co-founder of the Long Island/Big Apple Volleyball (LIBA) club junior program that captured all 15 regional titles (GEVA region) in three age groups during my five years with the club. I also founded and was Technical Director of Sunwest Volleyball club in San Diego, CA from 1993 – 1999. In seven years with Sunwest we built a program that won one title and placed in the top ten three times at USAV National Qualifiers.  Sunwest also had six top-ten regional finishes in the tough Southern California region. In 1999 our 18-1 team won the prestigious Davis Volleyball Festival.

Finally, I have had the honor to coach over 150 scholarship athletes, including 7 high school All-Americans, 4 Volleyball Magazine “Fab 50” players, 25+ NCAA DI All-Conference players, and 2 NCAA DI All-Americans. Currently, I am the Director of Coaching Development for Northern Virginia Volleyball Association (NVVA) the largest Jr. Volleyball Club in the Chesapeake region of USAV.

Eugene Yee
I’ve been a member of the Chesapeake Region for over 20 years, as a player, coach, scorekeeper, and Board member. I’ve been involved with Men’s, Women’s and Coed teams at all levels. In my years serving on the Board of Directors, I’ve been involved in many facets of the organization, including the Finance, Eligibility, and Nominations and Elections committees. I feel that the CHRVA should be an organization which promotes fairness and equality to all of its members, and have tried to use my experience and skills toward that end.

If I am re-elected, I will continue to devote my efforts to promote the sport of Volleyball within the region, and help make the organization one that we can all be proud of.
