USA Volleyball Chesapeake Region
Candidates for the Board of Directors - 2006
If you are interested in becoming a CHRVA Board Member, please check out the Election Process.  Your nomination must be received by the Chair of the Nominations and Elections Committee by February 1, 2006 to be included on the Official Candidate Slate.  If, by the deadline, there are still more available seats than candidates, nominations will be accepted from the floor during the Annual General Membership Meeting.

The official slate of candidates will be (or have been) closed as of February 1, 2006.

The following tables provide information about the individuals seeking election to the CHRVA Board of Directors for the year 2006.  Both tables specify whether or not the candidate is currently on the Board (Incumbent) and presents some personal comments as a means of introduction. The tables will be updated as additional candidates come forward.

This year, the Chesapeake Region will continue to make exclusive use of mail-in ballots to determine which candidates will be selected to fill the open seats on the Board of Directors.  Instructions and official ballots are included in the April 2006 Digs Newsletters that are addressed to CHRVA members.  Your votes determine the composition of the body that will make all of this Region's decisions. We urge you to get involved in Region operations at the most basic level by returning your completed election ballot by the deadline.

The Official Candidate Slate is a table that identifies all candidates who have met the nomination requirements specified in the CHRVA Bylaws by the February 1, 2006 deadline.

If you have any questions about the candidates or the process, please feel free to contact our Nominations and Elections Chair, Chris Cant, at:

Being a player, coach, tournament director, official, parent of a JOV player, husband of a great player, and coaching instructor provides great opportunities to see our wonderful sport from many different perspectives. The common bond that we all share is the love for our game. I believe that in our hearts we all want to grow the game—to provide more and better opportunities for everyone to experience the fever for the game that has touched all of us. Our challenge has always been to make these dreams a reality.
I have been on the Region’s Board of Directors for several long stints between 1980 – 2001. Each time that I have chosen not to run has been due to time constraints from other endeavors including my real job. Each time that I have decided to run has been due to over-riding concerns over the direction of our Board and Region. This is the case again. I believe that I can help to unite all of our membership—from the youngest of our JOV players to the oldest of our age group players, our coaches, officials, and other supporters—to grow our sport that has stagnated these past few years, especially in our adult ranks. This challenge has always been a daunting one under our organizational structure that heavily relies on volunteer efforts. I strongly believe that volunteers more readily respond to strong, consistent leadership that has the best interest of the sport as the foundation for its policies and actions. I believe that I can help to provide that leadership with your support. Additional details of my volleyball activities can be found at www.mvpvolleyball.net under the Coaches Section.
Wanda Hsiung
CHRVA Registrar 1990 - 2001; Board of Directors 1986 - 1996 and 2000 - present;
Registered member of CHRVA since 1978.

I am running for another term of the CHRVA Board of Directors because of my love of volleyball and my desire to contribute to the organization that supports it. I first registered with CHRVA while I was still in college, and have become more involved with each passing year.
I have not only participated as a player, but have served as a Junior Olympic boys coach for the past 15 years and also as an assistant coach and tournament coordinator for my daughter’s juniors team. Being both a player and coach has provided me with the opportunity to attend men’s tournaments of all levels (which is where our boys play most often), women’s A/AA tournaments and junior girls and boys tournaments. I have spent countless hours in the gym observing both budding problems and achievements attained there.
I wish to continue my term of service on the Board because I have knowledge of its progression and shaping over the last 20 years, and I want to make sure that we keep heading in a player-oriented direction. I have attended and participated in almost every Board meeting since 1986, and I feel that I can still be of use in a Director capacity.

Steve Lenderman
I would like to reintroduce myself back into the Chesapeake Region Volleyball Association after a three-year break. I have returned back to the region as a Junior’s Club Director for the YMCA of Delaware. My involvement with in the Chesapeake region began in 1991 when I was a player for the Champion Volleyball Club and juniors coach. During these 15 years I had completed Regional Referee status and moved my way up to the A level of play. Most of my connections with the Chesapeake Region and USA volleyball are from my coaching. Currently I have a CAP III certification and work with the USA Volleyball High Performance Program. Outside USA Volleyball I coached at McKean High School, was the Head Coach at Wilmington College and am currently the Assistant Coach at West Chester University of Pennsylvania. I am the President of the Delaware Volleyball Coaches Association and a member of the American Volleyball Coaches Association.
Currently I an employed with the YMCA of Delaware and believe my association with the YMCA and their long history with the sport will be an asset to the region. I also believe that my diverse background in volleyball and ability to see multiple perspectives from multiple positions make me an appropriate addition to the Chesapeake Region Volleyball Association Board of Directors.
Denny Moore
My contribution to the game of Volleyball comes in the form of organizational skills, not prowess on the court. I have formed, managed and played on teams for the Senior Olympics, USAV Nationals and the Huntsmans Games over the years. In addition, I have participated in the formation and management of Senior VB Leagues and tournaments in the area. Also, I participate in the management of Mid Atlantic Club (MAC) Volleyball functions. Currently, I am the Senior Men’s Coordinator and Finance Chair for CHRVA and have served on the Board of Directors for 2 years.
Jonathan Skolnik
Hi! My name is Jonathan Skolnik and I am interested in representing you on the CHRVA Board of Directors. I love volleyball and have lots of ideas on how to make the sport grow in our region. Did you know that four times as many 12 year olds per capita are playing club volleyball in Iowa than in our region? Did you know they have a beach volleyball regional championship in the Wisconsin Region, but that we don’t have one here? Did you know that when the AVP was on NBC, the Washington Post did not even include it in its TV listings in the sports page? Did you know that public middle school volleyball is almost non-existent in our region?
I have played volleyball for over twenty years and I have a “C” league trophy from 1985 to prove it! Although I am 49 years young, I still play 500 games a year. I love to set the 6-2 indoors or play 2’s or 4’s on the beach. My two daughters (10 and 14) are out there too! Almost five years ago I started a CHRVA club so my daughters could play and we remain the smallest club in the CHRVA with just one team. We have qualified for the Open Regional each year. Nine of the ten original players are still on the team and our roster is the same as last year. I have coached clinics for disadvantaged minority youths and I run a beach volleyball camp every summer in Rehoboth.
I believe that the small, rural and newer juniors clubs need more of a say. Do we really need to wait to the last minute to find out if we are in a tournament? Do we need to sit for seven hours in clinics that don’t really teach us or our kids how to keep score or referee? Do we need to spend our tournaments chasing around with score sheets to have them rated rather than coaching our girls? Should the established clubs get all the tournament dates, entry priorities, and seed the tournaments with no review?
I believe that we need to grow our region. Is there a reason why we can’t get kids a chance to play in middle school and in recreational leagues? Were the kids at the minority clinic right that volleyball is just a girl’s sport? Is there no way to get all those girls competing in high school and college to play as adults? Is there a reason we can’t encourage kids to play outdoors and on the beach to improve their skills by having a CHRVA beach juniors championship? Is there a reason we can’t have teams that finish higher at Nationals?
If you think some of these questions need to be asked than vote for me. I pledge to go to every meeting unless I am coaching that night (the girl’s come first). I live only a couple miles from the University of Maryland where the meetings are held. I have served on the Economics Committee at the Transportation Research Board of the National Academy of Sciences for nine years and have never missed a committee meeting so you can count on me.
Skip Slawson
Coaching and working with youth sports since 1986.
Coaching Volleyball since 1995.
Juniors Age Group Coordinator since 1998.
CHRVA Board of Directors since January 2002.

Volleyball is a fantastic sport. With many years of sport participation and administration experience, I would like to continue working to support and improve the volleyball activities and growth in the Chesapeake Region. My experience with other sports and System Engineering professional background will allow me to offer a variety of ideas and organizational experience to the Region.

Terry Smallwood
I have more than 35 years of experience participating in athletics from playing sports to managing players. I’m the coach for MVSA Hott Shots 16’s volleyball. I’ve been a coach with MVSA for the last 14 years. I’m also the head coach for Varsity Volleyball at Georgetown Visitation. I’m interested in becoming a CHRVA Board member because I have a lot of ideals that I know could help support the region functions.
Joe Spellman
Member of Chesapeake Region for over 20 years. Served two terms on Board of Directors in the 1980’s. Played B/BB and now active in Senior Volleyball. Coached Junior Boys and Junior Girls teams. Most recently have been active as MVSA Girls Volleyball tournament director organizing and running over 30 tournaments each year as well as running the previous Region sponsored Chesapeake Challenge with over 140 teams. Areas where I think the significant improvements could be made include much greater involvement of the volleyball community in decisions before they are made, more timely delivery of services, outreach to promote volleyball in underrepresented areas of the Region and to reverse the decline in Adult membership, and integration of the current separately operating groups into a more cost effective, unified Region focused on customer service.
