Commissioner’s Corner
by Anne Hughes
New rules, a new year, a new season and a new Millennium. Lots of changes for players and officials. Red and yellow cards have taken on a whole new meaning and “officials signals” are sometimes confusing for them as well as the players. All of this takes a lot of getting used to but change is inevitable, no matter what sport you play and I venture to say that this time next year we will all wonder what the fuss was all about.

This Region is pleased to welcome the start of a new Starlings program for the DC area. This program was established in 1995 and the first club was started in 1996 in San Diego. These clubs exclude no girls due to financial hardship. Each individual club is encouraged to adopt a mentoring program to nurture personal growth and educational achievement. This program allows girls aged eight to eighteen to train and compete at USA Volleyball’s Junior Olympic level. Each club is community based and self sustaining. If you would like to help out in any way please contact me. The Region has a club in Wilmington, DE. and one in Baltimore, MD.

I have received the pre-tournament Manuals for the 2000 USA Open Volleyball Championships. The entry deadlines for applications and fees for teams entering the OPEN tournaments is Wed, March 29th, 2000. Club, Coed, Masters and Seniors tournaments deadline is Wed, April 26th. Please remember that your entry is not complete until it is verified by the Commissioner. The entry fee is $675 a team while the Co-Ed and Reverse Co-Ed is $500 a team.
