ATTENTION ALL SCOREKEEPERS: If
you have finished your certification or recertification requirements, you
received confirmation in the mail - usually your corrected test and a certification
card, or a letter with instructions on completing practice matches. If
you have not heard anything and are planning to keep score at tournaments,
don’t assume anything - contact me and make sure I have received your test,
ratings, etc. before keeping score. If you are recertifying this year,
please make sure you complete your three practice matches and get them
sent in to Kelli Auletta.
I’d like to take the opportunity to thank
everyone involved in the Clinic and Fellowship season. Overall, the clinics
went smoothly. Our region volunteers have done a great job! Thanks to
the Scorekeeper Clinicians and Assistants: Dixie Collins, Kelli
Auletta, Jill Pflug, Diane Abood, Jan Bowser,
Debbie Reed, Jo Ann Peters. Thanks to our Fellowship
Committee: Debbie Reed, Kelli Auletta, Bryan Strong,
Robin Lamott, Stacey Weitzel, Julie Briggs and Tracy
Shadle for taking all those calls for appointments, fitting people
in the schedule, and dealing with all of those stressful last minute changes,
cancellations, additions, etc. Also, thanks to all of the raters who gave
up their time to be in a gym to help all the candidates get rated. Finally,
special thanks to Dick Smith and Guy Wainio-Oato who handled the
duplication of all the clinic materials and new scoresheets.
During the off-season, the Fellowship Committee
will be reviewing the policies and procedures. We would love to hear from
any of you who have been through the process on the candidate side. If
you have any comments or criticisms about your clinic or rating experience,
or especially any suggestions for improvements, please, please don’t hesitate
to let us know. We will continue to tweak the system to iron out what we
see as the kinks, but it would help to know how the candidates feel about
it, too.
Remember - candidates and re-certifying scorekeepers
WILL receive cards in the mail confirming their certification.
If you don’t receive a card, you are probably not recertified! When in
doubt, contact me to confirm your status BEFORE you keep
score. YOU are responsible for keeping track of YOUR certification.
There are just too many of you (over 700 adults) for me to remember everyone’s
special circumstances. And don’t delay! Letting the season slip by and
then asking next year will usually bring the response: “Sorry, it’s
too late, you’ll have to start over!”
ALSO REMEMBER: IF YOUR ADDRESS CHANGES,
YOU MUST NOTIFY ME or you cannot be certain that your scorekeeper mailings
will find you. If you fail to recertify based on your mail not being forwarded
to you, you will have to start all over again as a candidate. You have
been warned!
Once the sanctioned tournaments are under
way, I’d like remind everyone that there are stiff penalties for teams
using non-certified scorekeepers. Remember, every team is provided an alternative
(payment of $8.00 per work match, either included in the entry fee, or
at tournament check-in) if they cannot provide certified scorekeepers,
so there is really no excuse. Non-certified referees and scorekeepers are
one thing our Scoresheet review committee looks for during the season.
Be forewarned!
NEW PROCEDURES CLARIFIED
Things are a bit confusing this year due to
the changes in the game and the scorekeeping system. A number of things
were unclear at the clinics. Here are a few points that have been clarified
recently:
-
IF YOU HAVE NOT ATTENDED A CLINIC THIS YEAR, AND HAVE NOT TAKEN THE
1999-2000 TEST ON THE NEW SCOREKEEPING PROCEDURES, YOU ARE NOT CERTIFIED
TO USE THE NEW SCORESHEET. You must continue to keep score using the
old method on the old scoresheet. The sheets are to be provided by all
tournament directors. I know this will be difficult, which is why we encouraged
everyone to recertify this year. By next year, we will all have been instructed
on the new sheet and will be using the new system, which, despite certain
disadvantages, is much easier to use in a rally score environment.
-
SANCTIONS, and the signals shown to identify them, have changed
significantly for this season.
To recap:
Improper Requests will be “waved off” by the referee(s) and
ARE to be recorded on the scoresheet. They are recorded in the sanctions
box.
Team Delays - the first is a warning and is shown with one hand
against the opposite wrist - no card in hand. The second is a penalty (loss
of rally) - shown with a yellow card held against the opposite wrist. These
are recorded in the sanctions box.
Minor Misconduct is a verbal or visual warning and is NOT
recorded on the scoresheet.
Rude Conduct is the repeated minor or first major unsporting
act - and is a penalty (loss of rally). The signal is a YELLOW CARD.
It is recorded in the sanctions box.
Expulsion is for repeated offensive conduct and is shown by
a RED CARD. It is recorded in the Remarks section, and carries
no further penalty.
Disqualification is continued or repeated offensive conduct,
or physical aggression. It is shown by a RED AND YELLOW CARD HELD TOGETHER,
and it is recorded in the Remarks section. No further penalty is
assessed.
SCOREKEEPING TIPS AND REMINDERS FOR 2000
-
ALL CAPS, ALL CAPS, ALL CAPS throughout entire scoresheet!
-
Adults are now SENIORS, place X in box. Juniors, you use the other box!
-
For Chesapeake Region tournaments, Pool/Phase box can remain empty.
-
Tournament date should be six characters (for example, 02-05-00).
-
Use MILITARY TIME, which is four characters long (for example, 0900),
no colon.
-
Lineups are in PEN!
-
Pencil only used DURING ACTUAL MATCH. Once the Ref blows whistle
for serve, EVERYTHING thereafter in pencil, including start time. After
write point 25 in pencil, put the pencil down and pick up the pen.
-
Remember, start time in pencil, end time in pen.
-
Remember THREE X’s when recording serving and receiving info (next to serving
team name, next to receiving team name, and in box of first server on receiving
team).
-
Check marks are made for players’ FIRST SERVE. If wrong
server serves, NO CHECK MARK is made. If the receiving team wins game point,
(game point scored on a side out) put the exit score in the box of the
person who would have served next, WITH NO CHECK MARK.
-
Remember THREE things on sub (slash player number, write score,
slash team sub).
-
Get in rhythm* “EXIT SCORE, GIVE OTHER TEAM POINT; EXIT SCORE, GIVE
OTHER TEAM POINT; EXIT SCORE, GIVE OTHER TEAM POINT.”
-
At end of game, circle BOTH final exit scores in pen. (NEVER circle
final points in running score. Only time there is circle in running score
is if it’s result of PENALTY point.)
-
Make hourglasses in pen from last point on in running score column
of BOTH teams.
-
At bottom of sheet, LAST NAME FIRST, LAST NAME FIRST, LAST NAME
FIRST!
ATTENTION TOURNAMENT DIRECTORS
Please remember to send all of the scoresheets
from your regular season tournament as soon as possible after the day of
play. Kelli Auletta, our Scoresheet Review Committee Chair has enlisted
the help of several individuals to review scoresheets this season. Send
scoresheets to the appropriate individual listed below. This information
is revised since last season, so take a look!

The purpose of reviewing the scoresheets is
to:
-
Identify basic technique errors and try to catch disasters in the making
before they cost a team a close game.
-
Identify teams utilizing non-certified scorekeepers.
-
Track practice sheets for recertification.
RECERTIFYING SCOREKEEPERS - you must keep score three times during
this season, and send those scoresheets to the appropriate review committee
person. If the sheets are the “official” match scoresheets, they
will be sent in by the tournament director. If you are doing a practice
sheet, mark it as such and either send it in through the Tournament Director
OR (SAFER BET) send it to the review person yourself.
NATIONAL NEWS
Scorekeepers interested in joining the ranks
of the National Scorekeepers should make their intentions known to me,
in writing — ASAP. Be prepared to volunteer in the region for at least
two seasons before being considered. We need to see a continuous commitment
to helping the program before sending candidates on to Nationals. Also,
if you are a referee looking to use this position as a stepping-stone to
advancement as a referee, bear in mind that “scorekeeper-only” candidates
will be given first priority when candidate selection time comes around.
The reason: the scorekeeper program needs the help that dedicated scorekeepers
can provide AFTER they come back to the Region as National Scorekeepers.
Regional Scorekeepers need to have participated
in at least two of these areas before being considered for National Scorekeeper
candidacy:
-
Assist with certification/testing process
-
Help with candidate registration at fall clinics
-
Teach recertification clinics
-
Assist at new scorekeeper clinics
-
Assist the Fellowship Committee with scheduling candidates for ratings
-
Rate candidates at Fellowships
-
Serve on Scoresheet Review Committee
-
Volunteer to keep score at Regionals
As you can see, there is plenty to do, whether
one is aspiring to be a National Scorekeeper or not! We
need volunteers! We need people to help lighten the workload
on each of us. Please contact me via email, fax, mail or phone to lend
a hand. And thanks again to those who have helped in the past. I am very
happy to see some new names and faces this year - thanks for helping out!
Thanks for your patience as we go through
this major transition in scorekeeping!
