Long Beach State middle blocker
Cheryl Weaver was named First Team All-America by the American Volleyball
Coaches Association (AVCA) for the second consecutive year after leading
the 49ers in kills and blocks during the 2000 season. Earlier this month,
she was named the Big West Conference’s Co-Player of the Year, First Team
All-Region, and First Team All-Conference. She was also named to the NCAA
Regional All-Tournament team. She is the 27th AVCA All-American for Long
Beach State.
Cheryl led the 49ers with 4.6 kills and 1.6
blocks per game, was second in hitting percentage (.342), and was third
on the
team with 2.3 digs per game. She, along with Stanford’s Logan Tom, was
the only two-time First Team All-American on this year’s team. Cheryl led
the squad to the NCAA Regionals this season with a 22-8 record and top
15 national ranking. Two times during the regular season, she was honored
as the Big West Conference’s Player of the Week.
Cheryl grew up in Washington, DC and was a
member of DC Juniors Volleyball Club for five years. While at Sidwell Friends,
she garnered All-League honors all four years. In 1997, she was named Washington
Post Player of the Year and also made The Post’s All Met First Team three
times. Cheryl was a three-time Gatorade Player of the Year for Washington,
D.C. and was a member of the Junior National Team.
Congratulations Cheryl!
