Call for Nominations
Each year the members of CHRVA are asked
to nominate and elect individuals to serve on the CHRVA Board of Directors.
Currently, our By-Laws require that the election take place during the
General Membership Meeting held each May. You may only vote if you are
present at this meeting. As we discovered in the survey we conducted this
past year, there is a great deal of interest in providing a mail ballot,
and/or electronic voting. The Board of Directors is currently looking into
both of these options, as well as other options that will allow for greater
participation in this very important process. However, for this year,
the process will remain as stated in the current By-Laws.
CHRVA directors serve two year terms. This
year, eight positions are up for re-election. The Nominations Committee
is seeking individuals from each of the following categories to place on
the slate of candidates: Mens AA/A, Women’s BB/B, Junior Girls, Scorekeeper,
the North District (Delaware and Baltimore, Howard, Harford, Cecil and
Kent counties in Maryland; and Baltimore City), the South District (Northern
Virginia), and two at-large representatives.
If you are interested in running for the Board
of Directors, your nomination must be submitted in writing and received
by the Chair of the Nominations Committee by April 1, 2001. Your nomination
must include the name, address, and team affiliation (if registered with
a team) of the nominee. Also, include a brief personal and volleyball related
background statement (300 words or less) of the nominee, a statement of
consent signed by the nominee, and your name and telephone number. Individuals
may nominate themselves.
For further information on the election process
and the responsibilities of the Board of Directors, please see the CHRVA
website at www.chrva.org.
Nominations should be sent to:

Special Olympics - Call for Volunteers
The Special Olympics, District of Columbia,
(SODC), will be holding their Summer Games, Thursday, May 10 and Friday,
May 11, 2001, at Catholic University. On Thursday afternoon, from 11:00
a.m. to 1:30 p.m., the volleyball competition will be held at the Raymond
DuFour Athletic Center. CHRVA has been asked to help with the competition
and I have volunteered to act as the Volleyball Competition Manager. I
am looking for volunteer referees, scorekeepers, and other volleyball players
interested in helping out with this most worthwhile event.
For those of you unfamiliar with this organization,
the mission of Special Olympics is to provide year-round sports training
opportunities and athletic competition in a variety of sports for children
and adults with developmental disabilities. Special Olympics provides
the chance for participants to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage,
experience the joy of achievement, be included in the community, build
skills and make friends.
While I am specifically looking for individuals
to help with the volleyball competition, they are always looking for volunteers
in other areas. Competitions will also be conducted in aquatics and athletics.
The two day event will also include Opening and Closing Ceremonies and
an Olympic Town. If you have never participated in a Special Olympics event,
I urge you to take a couple of hours from your busy day to witness one
of the most fulfilling sporting events you will ever encounter.
If you would like more information, please
contact me at (703) 461-3086 or karol.shadle@chrva.org.
You may also contact the Special Olympics District of Columbia at
(202) 544-7770. I urge you to get involved and share your love of the game
with these special individuals. I guarantee that you will never forget
the experience!
