ATTENTION SCOREKEEPERS
If you have finished your certification or
recertification requirements for Provisional or Regional Scorekeeper, you
received confirmation in the mail—your corrected test and a certification
card or a letter with instructions on completing practice matches. If you
have not received this information, do not assume anything. Contact me
and be sure I have received your test and ratings before keeping score.
Remember, your card is your proof of certification. Do not lose it! YOU
are responsible for keeping track of YOUR certification. There are just
too many of you (over 700 adults) for me to remember everyone's special
circumstances. Also remember that, if you let your certification lapse,
you must start over again as a candidate next season. Junior scorekeepers,
your program is handled differently; and, if you have questions about your
certification, you need to contact JoAnn Peters at 301-593-7287.
RECERTIFYING SCOREKEEPERS
You must keep score three times during this
season and send those scoresheets to the appropriate Review Committee person.
If the sheets are the “official” match scoresheets, they will be sent in
by the Tournament Director. If you are doing a practice sheet, mark it
as such and either send it in through the Tournament Director OR (safer
bet) send it to the Review person yourself. Jan Bowser handles those whose
last name begins with A-M, and Amy Ritter handles those whose last name
begins with N-Z.
SPECIAL THANKS to Jan Bowser and Amy Ritter who have taken on
the job of Scorekeeper Recertification Assistants. While I am not sure
they knew what they were in for when they volunteered, they have done a
great job of keeping up with all the recertification tests and practice
sheets.
REMINDER! IF YOUR ADDRESS CHANGES, YOU MUST NOTIFY ME, or you
cannot be certain that your scorekeeper mailings will find you. If you
fail to recertify based on your mail not being forwarded to you, you will
have to start all over again as a candidate. You have been warned!
NON-CERTIFIED SCOREKEEPERS
Now that sanctioned tournaments are underway,
I would like to remind everyone that there are stiff penalties for teams
using non-certified scorekeepers. Remember, all teams are provided an alternative
(payment of $8.00 per work match, either included in the entry fee or at
tournament check-in) if they cannot provide certified scorekeepers, so
there is really no excuse. Identifying non-certified referees and scorekeepers
is one thing our Scoresheet Review Committee looks for during the season.
Be forewarned!
ATTENTION TOURNAMENT DIRECTORS
Please remember to send all of the scoresheets
from your regular season tournament as soon as possible after the day of
play. Dixie Collins, our Scoresheet Review Committee Chair, has enlisted
the help of several individuals to review scoresheets this season. Send
scoresheets to the appropriate individual listed below. This information
is revised since last season, so take a look. The latest information
can always be found on the CHRVA Website at http://www.chrva.org/Contact_info/score_rev_comm.html.

The purpose of reviewing scoresheets is to:
-
identify basic technique errors and catch disasters in the making before
they cost a team a close game;
-
identify teams utilizing non-certified scorekeepers; and,
-
track practice sheets for recertification.
VOLUNTEERS WANTED TO KEEP SCORE AT REGIONALS
Any scorekeepers interested in volunteering
their time as a scorekeeper at Regionals, please contact Tim Stubbs (Tim.Stubbs@chrva.org)
to schedule your time slots. This is a VERY good thing to do if you are
interested in being considered for National Scorekeeper at some point in
the future. Tim needs to hear from all volunteers by March 25th in order
to get the master schedule made up. We had a number of great volunteers
at Regionals last year, and we received favorable comments from players
and officials who participated on those courts.
SOME REMINDERS ABOUT THE NEW LIBERO POSITION
Scorekeepers and referees need to work together
to make sure the Libero is used properly during games.
The Libero CANNOT:
-
Wear the same shirt as the rest of the team.
-
Serve.
-
Block or attempt to block.
-
Set from in front of the attack line (attack hit is the fault, not the
set itself).
-
Attack the ball if it is above the height of the net.
The Libero MUST:
-
Change positions between the attack line and end line on the sideline near
their bench.
-
Wait for change until after Second Referee checks positions on the floor
at the beginning of the game. After that, the libero can change during
a dead ball; BUT, once the libero leaves the court, one serve must
take place before he/she returns.
The Libero is designated for the MATCH when the
coach or captain turns in the lineup sheet for the first game. The Libero
cannot be changed for subsequent games or added if not designated at the
beginning of the match.
Tracking the Libero
There are two important procedures that the
Assistant Scorekeeper is responsible for enforcing. The first is that when
the Libero player leaves the court, the player originally replaced by the
Libero is the player who must return to the court. This can be tracked
on a separate sheet of paper using any method the Assistant finds easy
to use. An example is shown in the Scorekeeper's Instructions section of
the USAV Rule Book. There is also a form for Libero tracking on the CHRVA
website.
The second procedure that the Assistant Scorekeeper
must enforce is that once the Libero leaves the court, at least one serve
must take place before the Libero returns to the court.
NATIONAL NEWS
Scorekeepers interested in joining the ranks
of the National Scorekeepers should make their intentions known to me in
writing ASAP. Be prepared to volunteer in the Region for at least two seasons
before being considered. We need to see a continuous commitment to helping
the program before sending candidates on to Nationals. Also, if you are
a referee looking to use this position as a stepping-stone to advancement
as a referee, bear in mind that “scorekeeper-only” candidates will be given
first priority when candidate selection time comes around. The reason for
this is that the scorekeeper program needs the help dedicated scorekeepers
can provide AFTER they come back to the Region as National Scorekeepers.
Regional Scorekeepers need to have participated
in at least two of the following areas before being considered for National
Scorekeeper candidacy:
-
Assisting with certification/testing process
-
Helping with candidate registration at fall clinics
-
Teaching recertification clinics
-
Assisting at new scorekeeper clinics
-
Assisting the Fellowship Committee with scheduling candidates for ratings
-
Rating candidates at Fellowships
-
Serving on Scoresheet Review Committee
-
Volunteering to keep score at Regionals
As you can see, there is plenty to do, whether
one is aspiring to be a National Scorekeeper or not! We need volunteers!
We need people to help lighten the workload on each of us. Please contact
me via email, fax, mail, or phone to lend a hand. And, thanks again to
those who have helped in the past. I am very happy to see some new names
and faces this year. Thanks for helping out! |
