Hosting A Tournament
...It is easier than you think!

Hosting a tournament is a little bit of work, but the benefits can be worthwhile. Not only do you gain entry into your own tournament, but your team will earn a priority entry for a future tournament. A priority entry will give you entry into a tournament without the consideration of last date played or team registration number. Of course, your invitation must be submitted by the closing date, and the appropriate box must be checked indicating you wish to use your earned priority.

Most of the detailed information that you will require to host a tournament is located in the CHRVA Handbook which is available on the website. You can easily request a sanction packet via email or by calling Tournament Scheduling Coordinator, Ron Sommer at any time throughout the year.

Teams often think that hosting a tournament is a lot of work. Actually, it involves filling out and submitting a request form and finding a facility. Once the tournament is approved by the Tournament Scheduler, the host needs to provide balls, scoresheets, and other miscellaneous supplies. Many facilities you may rent will have the nets, poles, and referee stands up and ready for use, or they will have the equipment on site for easy set-up. After the tournament takes place, there is some minor paperwork that needs to be forwarded to the appropriate parties.

Finding a facility is probably one of the hardest details of arranging a tournament. Next season, the Volleyball House may not be used to host tournaments since it is negotiating its lease and attempting to build a facility. There are other options for potential tournament hosts. You can check the CHRVA webpage to obtain information on tournament locations to get an idea of where to host a tournament. There are some new facilities that are being underutilized.

The new Frederick Sportsplex has over 1.6 million square feet of space and includes a snack bar in the facility. It is located in the Worman’s Mill Industrial Park just off North Market Street in Frederick, Maryland. You can contact them through the website at www.fredericksportsplex.com.

The Discovery Sports Center in Boyds, Maryland is a brand new facility where many Regional Championships are being held this year. The facility is located off Clopper Road just outside of Germantown, Maryland. For further information, you may contact them at www.mdsoccerplex.org.

In Rockville, there is another new facility called the Rockville Sportsplex. It also has several courts, and you can contact them at www.rockvillesports.com.

Start planning your tournament in the fall by securing a facility and submitting the paperwork as early as possible. Hosting an event will assure your team’s entry into certain tournaments AND will help the Region tremendously by providing more playing opportunities for the membership. It’s never too late. Good luck!
