| The Special Olympics D.C. Summer
Games are scheduled for Tuesday, May 7, 2002, at Catholic University.
The volleyball competition will be held in the DuFour Athletic Center from
12:15 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. Opening ceremonies for athletes of all sports
will be at 10:45 a.m. in the football stadium. CHRVA will again be
managing the volleyball venue, and we need volunteer referees, scorekeepers,
line judges, and anyone else willing to help. This year, the teams
will be using rally scoring to ensure the matches are completed on time.
If you are interested, please contact JoBeth Killough at JoBeth.Killough@chrva.org.
The volunteers did a great job last year in creating a memorable venue
for the athletes. Special Olympics D.C. looks forward to our involvement
and support once again this year.
At last year’s games, the Chesapeake Region donated $3,000 to the Special
Olympics D.C. Volleyball Program. The funds were used to purchase
portable equipment such as nets, standards, and other volleyball-related
items for training athletes. Now that they have the equipment in
place, they are looking for CHRVA members who might have an interest in
working with the Special Olympics volleyball teams as coaches. The
challenge is that virtually all of the teams train one day a week, on a
weekday, for 1 - 1 ½ hours sometime between 10:30 a.m. and 1:00
p.m. Anybody working in downtown D.C. can drive to the training sites
in 15 minutes, so 30 minutes is allocated to travel time. The remaining
hour is spent coaching the athletes. Each program has a head coach
responsible for bringing the athletes to the training site and handling
the logistics, but volunteers are needed to do what he or she does best…coach
and work with the athletes. A volunteer would not have to commit
to every week if they travel for work since practice would still take place
under the guidance of the head coach. Anyone interested in volunteering
can contact Karol Shadle at karol.shadle@chrva.org. |
