2003 Regional Championship Dates Announced
Rod Anderson, Vice President - rod.anderson@chrva.org
The 2003 CHRVA Championships will be held between March 29, 2003 and May 3, 2003.  Competition is planned for more than 250 teams in eight adult and 20 junior divisions at the Discovery Sports Center in Boyds, Maryland and Catonsville Community College in Catonsville, Maryland.  Directions to the Discovery and Catonsville sites can be found on the CHRVA website at http://www.volleyball.to/chrva/directions/discovery.html and http://www.volleyball.to/chrva/directions/caton.html, respectively.

The latest and most complete information regarding the Regional Championship Tournament Schedule is maintained on the CHRVA website at http://www.chrva.org/rgsched.html.

Members often ask how the various dates for Regional Championship competition are selected.  As Vice President, I am tasked with overseeing this very complicated decisionmaking process.  Scheduling the Regionals is often a logistical nightmare, involving:

  1. forecasting the number of teams in each division which will compete at Regionals, which is particularly difficult with the fluctuating number of teams in certain divisions;
  2. finding enough quality facilities to host all of the tournaments, especially those large enough to accommodate the bigger divisions;
  3. fielding enough referees, scorekeepers, and volunteers to staff the tournaments;
  4. scheduling the Regionals on dates that do not conflict with other tournaments—both in-Region and out-of-Region—or on holidays;
  5. rotating play dates from year to year so that one division does not always play early or always play late in the schedule;
  6. factoring in the entry deadlines for National competition (both Adult and Junior); and,
  7. balancing the regular season with the postseason.
Based on regular season play, Division Coordinators will invite teams to play in the Championships.  Contact your Division Coordinator for more details.  At press time, the only undecided division was junior boys.  Entry fee for the Championships has been set at $150.00.  The only exception will be for multiple divisions playing on one court on the same day.

The winning team in each adult division and each junior open division is eligible to have its team entry fee for the USAV National Championships reimbursed.  Please contact Commissioner Anne Hughes for USAV National Championships deadlines.

CHRVA plans to fully staff all Championship Tournaments with first referees, relieving teams of this responsibility.  In order to retain their "good standing" in the Region, all referees with a Regional or higher certification are required to work at least one full-day Championship Tournament.  Further information is available from CHRVA Referee Chair Larry Liden.  Scorekeeping volunteers are also greatly appreciated.  Please contact Scorekeeper Chair Dixie Collins for more information.  Other volunteer opportunities are available as well!  Please contact me at rod.anderson@chrva.org or 703-330-4565.

Good luck at the Championships!
