Commissioner’s Corner

Now that the season is in full swing, I would like to take the opportunity to thank all the men and women who have worked so hard to make this season a success.  To the members who give so unselfishly of their time and energy to implement new programs and ideas, my thanks go to each and every one of you.

I would especially like to congratulate the Montgomery Village Sports Association (MVSA) and Tom Burke on the article published in the last issue of the Digs.  In this article, Tom explained how last fall they held a recreational league for school age girls led by experienced MVSA coaches.  This past season, one third of the players were either deaf or hard of hearing.  The girls learned and improved their skills through structured practices led by the coaches.  The girls were taught by means of visual examples and sign language.  Also used were diagrams as needed to communicate team formations and attack..

I was so impressed by this that I sent the article to the  Member Relations and Human Resources Division of USA Volleyball.  I am a member of one of its committees, and I felt that this effort definitely qualified and deserved recognition since it creates a positive awareness of volleyball through development and implementation of a worthwhile program. The entire article by Tom will be sent to all the 39 regions that belong to USA Volleyball.  Many thanks and congratulations to Tom and MVSA.
