DC Beach Volleyball:  A Unique Local Program

There are growing outdoor opportunities in the Region for young volleyball players to test and improve their all-around skills.  One of them is a unique and fun-filled summer volleyball program which has caught the attention of junior girls over the last few years as a diversion from the traditional sixes play in high-school and club volleyball.

DC Beach Volleyball is a summer volleyball program for girls living in the Washington Metropolitan area, aged 13 to 17, who want to enjoy outdoor volleyball.  Already in its fourth year, this new and fast growing activity has promoted volleyball in a refreshing atmosphere allowing girls to learn additional skills and have loads of fun!  Lead by Director and Coach Tom Burke, the girls can expect structured yet fun-filled practices.  Regular outdoor sessions help prepare them for beach or grass tournaments in the D.C. area, on the East Coast, and even for Nationals in California or Florida!

Several local teams enjoyed huge successes last summer by sweeping two prominent East Coast Beach Volleyball tournaments.  First, in a Tidewater Volleyball Association tournament last July, two of the program’s doubles teams took the top two places at this Virginia Beach Women’s BB division contest.  The volleyball setting was superb as the players competed alongside the ocean on a wonderfully sunny day with light ocean breezes.  Then again in August, success continued with a one-two championship finish by its teams at a unique East Coast High School Girls Beach Tournament in Point Pleasant, New Jersey, sponsored by the Jersey Shore Volleyball Association.  Loads of fun was had by all competing.  For more details about getting involved in this exciting outdoor program, check out their website at www.jrgirlsbeachvb.org.  Additional outdoor volleyball opportunities can also be found on CHRVA’s website at http://www.chrva.org/othrlnks.html.  Check it out!
