It is time to say farewell to one of our more
memorable members: Dennis Kemp has taken a new job and is leaving us for
South Dakota (?!?!). Following is a very un-official recap of Dennis’ contributions
to the Chesapeake Region: He participated as a player and a coach at various
levels over the years. Eventually, Dennis began to get this crazy idea
that there should be a place for volleyball to call home. A “Volleyball
House” if you will. Dennis floated his idea past as many friends
as he could, and orchestrated the project from a dream into the reality
we know today. I am sure many of us remember the early days of just four
courts, no heat, a leaky roof, and other wonderful amenities. In spite
of a rocky start, and continuing challenges faced by Volleyball House,
we have to thank Dennis Kemp for the fact that we have the site, and our
Region benefits from a convenient place to host tournaments. In addition
to getting Volleyball House off the ground, Dennis developed the East Coast
Volleyball Club, which has provided an opportunity for many to participate
in our sport. He served several terms on the Region board of directors,
and started our first Web page. Whew! What a resume! Good Luck, Dennis.
Thanks for all your contributions. Hope to see you at Nationals.
And speaking of our Web page, Jeff Maynard,
our Communications Committee chair, will be taking over the maintenance
of our Web site. The address is:

Charles Ezigbo has established a Web site for
CHRVA Officials. Take a look at it for useful information on the referee
and scorekeeper programs:

We are approaching our annual General Membership
meeting. Specific information on the meeting will be announced, but we
are looking for individuals who may be interested in running for a spot
on our Region Board of Directors. If you are interested in serving on the
Board, please contact Eugene Yee
by March 15 for information on the Nominations and Elections process,
as well as the duties and responsibilities of the board members.
Also, at this time of year, many of our members
are preparing to attend the Nationals. This year the US Open Volleyball
Championships will be held in Tucson, Arizona. They start Memorial
Day weekend, and continue through that week. The range of competition
will be wide this year, as the tournament will welcome a number of international
teams to compete in the Open division. Age group competition is becoming
more popular, and the expansion of the various men’s and women’s levels
from AA to B means that there is something for almost everyone at the event.
I encourage as many Chesapeake Region members as possible to attend.
For more information on the event, contact our Commissioner, Dick
Smith.
And finally, I will mention again that we have
established a personnel search committee to identify candidates for a regional
commissioner, as the current commissioner’s term expires as of May 1998.
Should we need to make a change in this very important position, we need
a list of qualified applicants from which to choose. Interested parties
should contact our Region Secretary, JoBeth
Killough, for more information.
Lost and Found note: Judy Delong at Volleyball
House has two bags of numbered uniform shirts that were left at VBH some
time ago. If you lost these, contact Judy and correctly identify the shirts
to claim them. |
