Thanks to Jeff Maynard for the excellent job
of getting our web page moved and re-named to the very easy to remember
www.chrva.org. This is a
great move for us. I had the occasion to do some looking around at
the new site, and I am very impressed! It is so helpful to have a
place to go to get questions answered. One of the biggest issues we have
had in our region has been lack of information. In the past several years
we have revised and updated the handbook, established and maintained the
web site and gotten the DIGS published on a regular basis. What a fantastic
start in our efforts to keep the membership informed. And all of this has
happened with Jeff Maynard as our Communications Committee Chair. THANK
YOU to Jeff and all who support him in these efforts.
We are also excited to have Fran Duvall and
Rich Wilson step up and take on the formidable task of running the Junior
Girls’ program. This segment of our Region is huge already, and growing
in leaps and bounds. Fran is our Junior Girls Coordinator, and Rich is
the Junior Girls Administrator. There are lots of great plans in the works
for the program, and we wish them lots of luck in getting them implemented.
We are approaching our annual General Membership
meeting. The date is May 2, 1999, and the site is the new East
County Community Center in Montgomery County. I hope a number
of you will turn out to get involved in helping to run our Region. We REALLY
need volunteers to help out. There are so many things that need to be done,
and we either have the same small handful of people doing the projects,
or the jobs aren’t getting done at all. Our Region runs pretty well on
a day-to-day basis, but there are lots of possibilities out there for us
to explore: sponsorships, membership drives, searches for new playing sites,
ways to develop and market our sport in this area. We need help to expand
our horizons, and make the Chesapeake Region a better place to play for
all of us!
Also at this time of year many of our members
are preparing to attend the Nationals. This year the US Open Volleyball
Championships will be held in San Jose, California. They start Memorial
Day weekend, and continue through that week. The range of competition will
be wide this year, as the tournament will welcome a number of international
teams to compete in the Open Division. Age group competition is becoming
more and more popular, and the expansion of the various Men’s and Women’s
levels from AA to B mean that there is something for almost everyone at
the event. I encourage as many Chesapeake Region members as possible to
attend. For more information on the event, contact our Commissioner, Dick
Smith (smithavo@erols.com).
