This year's election of Directors was a first
for CHRVA, as it was the first time the election was conducted by mail.
In 2001, the Board of Directors amended the CHRVA Bylaws to change from
our previous method of voting at the annual General Membership Meeting.
This change was in response to the results of a membership survey conducted
last year. The main goal for this change was to increase membership
participation in the election process.
The previous issue of the Chesapeake Digs contained
the official ballot for the election. The results of the election
are reported in this issue. A total of 132 ballots were cast in this
year's election. While that only represents approximately 3.5% of
the membership, it did represent a significant increase from previous years,
when ballots were cast at the General Membership Meeting. Attendance
at that annual meeting often numbered fewer than 30 members.
One option under consideration is moving to
electronic voting, either by email or on the web. While we would
expect much greater participation using these methods, there are significant
technical concerns which would need to be addressed and overcome to ensure
the process would be fair and simple. Such a change would also require
amending the CHRVA Bylaws.
From the Election Committee's point of view,
this year's election process went pretty smoothly. However, we would
be interested in your point of view. What did you like about the
process? What needs to be changed or improved? We'd like to
hear your thoughts. Please send them to Steve.Burinsky@CHRVA.org.
