CHRVA Website Traffic Report

The accompanying chart provides a big-picture view of the CHRVA Website’s growth and, consequently, its usefulness to the membership. Four curves are included.  Each curve presents the number of Hits Per Day to the Main Page averaged over varying time periods.  So, each curve tells a different part of the story.  Furthermore, as more individuals bookmark their most frequented areas of the site for their own convenience, they bypass the Main Page.  The curves can then be considered to represent lower bound on the actual growth of the site.  A short description of each curve follows.

Average Hits Between Dates

The red curve gives the most instantaneous view of the Website’s usage.  The number of Hits Per Day is averaged over the time since the most recent previous date sample was taken.  The time period could be as little as a few days to as long as a month or so, depending on time of year.  Since there are markers at each data position on the curves, it is easy to tell approximately how much time is reflected in the data values.

3-Month Average

The blue curve gives a slightly longer-term view by computing the average number of Hits Per Day over the previous 3-month period. In broad terms, the growth at the early part of each season can be compared to the growth at the latter parts of each season.

6-Month Average

The black curve gives the number of Hits Per Day averaged over the previous 6-month period.  Since our season is on the order of the same duration, this curve can give a good indication of how we are doing seasonally.

Average Hits

The pink curve gives the average number of Hits Per Day since we began taking data on October 18, 1998.  It takes years of sustained growth to drive this curve higher.  Therefore, a good steady increase in this curve is extremely encouraging.  If the curve shows an increasingly steep rising slope, that means we are seeing extremely high website traffic growth.

Looking at the chart, the overall trend should be obvious to everyone, encouraging to the Region’s leadership, and satisfying to the many volunteers who have worked diligently on the maintenance and improvement of the site over the years.  The curves clearly indicate that usage of the CHRVA Website is increasing annually.  At the same time, it is easy to understand why there are dips in the curves and when the dips occur.  In fact, the typical member should be able to determine approximately when each CHRVA season begins and when it ends by looking at the right curve.

Not surprisingly, the highest number of Hits Per Day occurs towards the end of the season and prior to Regionals.  We continue to experience steady increases in end-of-season traffic from year to year.  And overall, the pink curve (Ave Hits) indicates that we are doing quite well.  However, the red curve (Ave Hits Betw Dates) also indicates a slight weakness.  Our beginning-of-season traffic numbers do not show as high a growth rate as our end-of-season.  This is a good indication that we need to concentrate more of our efforts towards improving the timeliness, quality, and relevance of the Pre-Season information.  That is exactly what we plan to do.
