On May 5, I had the honor of presenting to five recipients the Robert L.
Lindsay Meritorious Service Award. This award was named after a gentleman
who was president of the USVBA from 1980 to1984. His accomplishments
are many and space does not allow me to list them all, but I will touch
on some of the most memorable ones.
As president, he was personally involved in three National Championships,
the National Team programs, and the National Sports Festival. One
of the most incredible things he did was to "ensure the successful continual
operation of major programs and the National Office.” “He gave personal
guarantees for bank loans to the USVBA during valleys in cash flows.
He became the largest single financial support entity in the history of
USVBA." I believe that record still holds. "There is no question
in our minds that Bob Lindsay was the right man at the right time for USAV
Volleyball. He not only preserved the internal order of events but graciously
guided the external order of events. The Lindsay years will be recorded
in the chronicles of the USAV as setting the foundation of the Association
as the National Governing Body of Volleyball in the United States."
“For those of you that are lucky enough to own a 1986 Guide Book, you will
find his entire life history and all of the awards he himself received.”
This year, the five recipients of the Lindsay award were Rod Anderson,
Arlene Geppi, Joe Spellman, Dixie Collins, and JoBeth Killough. Their
awards read "for contributing outstanding participation and other services
in the promotion of volleyball." Each person in their own individual way
has contributed to the smooth and efficient running of this Region.
They have given back to the Region all of these services, and we are proud
to have the use of their valuable talents for the betterment of volleyball.
Last, but certainly not least, I would like to join the Board and Staff
of the Chesapeake Region in thanking Karol Shadle for the four years she
served as President. The Board awarded her a gift certificate in
appreciation and recognition of her four years of dedicated service.
It was certainly not an easy job, and she performed it with graciousness
and goodwill. I wish to thank her personally for a job well done
and to tell her that I can assure her that even though she has "officially
retired" I know that we will still be calling upon her many talents!
