| Congratulations to our newest National Scorekeeper,
Tim Stubbs! Tim did a great job as a candidate at the USA Open Championships
in Columbus. We look forward to having Tim continue his work in the Region
to support the scorekeeping program. More on that later!
This has been a difficult year for those of
us in the administration of the scorekeeping program. The changes in the
scoresheet this year taxed our system, both at the National and Regional
levels. New scoresheet procedures and tests were received late from the
National Office, needed lots of corrections, etc., and that had a trickle-down
effect that impacted other areas of our program. We had a huge number of
clinic attendees who had to learn an all-new system. And on top of everything
else, our scorekeeper database was not Y2K compliant, and we have been
keeping all the records by hand.
Jill Pflug has been helping to develop a new
database. As a result, I plan to have a scorekeeper list generated later
this summer, and posted on the Region web site. So, before we start the
clinic process for next year, everyone can double check their cards and/or
the list on line, and then contact me if they have further questions.
Kelli Auletta is in the process of sending
out recertification cards. Again, a bigger than normal job this year. My
apologies to all who are still waiting for recertification cards. If you
have not received your card by the time you are reading this, and you believe
you completed your recertification requirements this past season, please
contact Kelli.
Thank Yous
To all the volunteer scorekeepers who gave
their time to help at Regionals, many thanks. I have not yet received the
tally sheets from the tournaments, so I do not have your names, but we
really appreciate your help!
Other National News
Scorekeepers interested in joining the ranks
of the National Scorekeepers should make their intentions known to me,
in writing between now and January, 2001. Be prepared to volunteer in the
region for at least two seasons before being considered. We need to see
a continuous commitment to helping the program before sending candidates
on to Nationals. Also, if you are a referee looking to use this position
as a stepping-stone to advancement as a referee, bear in mind that “scorekeeper-only”
candidates will be given first priority when candidate selection time comes
around. The reason: the scorekeeper program needs the help that dedicated
scorekeepers can provide AFTER they come back to the Region as National
Scorekeepers.
Regional Scorekeepers need to have participated
in at least two of these areas for two seasons before being
considered for National Scorekeeper candidacy:
-
Assist with certification/testing process
-
Help with candidate registration at fall clinics
-
Teach recertification clinics
-
Assist at new scorekeeper clinics
-
Assist the Fellowship Committee with scheduling candidates for ratings
-
Rate candidates at Fellowships
-
Serve on Scoresheet Review Committee
-
Volunteer to keep score at Regionals
For existing National Scorekeepers, there was
a discussion at the RVA meetings in Columbus, and each Scorekeeper Chair
has been asked to publish the requirements for National Scorekeepers to
remain “in good standing”. The list is very similar to the menu
above for aspiring candidates. So, here is our list!
In order to remain “in good standing”
National Scorekeepers in the Chesapeake Region must assist the program
by actively participating in at least two of the following each year. STRONG
emphasis is placed on teaching the clinics. We REALLY need our most
experienced scorekeepers sharing that experience with our candidates and
regional upgrades.
-
Teach recertification clinics (mid-day, weekend, or evening sessions in
October / November)
-
Teach new scorekeeper clinics (1/2 day sessions on weekends in October)
-
Assist with certification /testing process
-
Assist the Fellowship Committee with scheduling candidates for ratings
-
Rate candidates at Fellowships
-
Serve on Scoresheet Review Committee
-
Volunteer to keep score at Regionals
I ask each National Scorekeeper to contact me
by September 1, 2000 with information on how you will assist our regional
program.
As you can see, there is plenty to do, whether
one is aspiring to be a National Scorekeeper or not! We need volunteers!
We need people to help lighten the workload on each of us. Please contact
me via email, fax, mail or phone to lend a hand. And thanks again to those
who have helped in the past.
Final Words
For those who did not recertify this past year,
you will be required to attend a clinic this fall, so watch the Region
Web Site and September issue of the DIGS for clinic dates and times.
As always, IF YOU ARE MOVING THIS SUMMER,
OR IF YOU HAVE MOVED IN THE LAST 2 YEARS, please make sure you forward
your updated address to me ASAP, and hopefully no later than September
1, 2000. Thanks! |
