My second year as President of the CHRVA Board
of Directors has begun. I would like to thank everyone who has supported
me during the past year, especially the Board of Directors. Everyone has
done a great job of responding to the call to handle various projects during
the year, and the result has been positive.
At our recent Board of Directors meeting,
we appointed Dick Smith as our Commissioner for another one-year term.
We all appreciate the job Dick does as Commissioner (or we should!). For
those who may be unclear of the division of duties between Dick and myself,
I would like to take this opportunity to clarify. The Commissioner
is involved with day to day Regional operations. As President, I run the
meetings of the Board of Directors, and Chair the Personnel Committee,
(whose task it is to oversee the Commissioner). The Personnel Committee
and the Board of Directors have been concerned about a succession plan
for the Commissioner's position. When the time comes to make a change in
the position, we want to have a person in the wings who can step up and
take over the job with a minimum of disturbance to our normal operations.
We have decided to establish volunteer positions for one or more "Assistants
to the Commissioner." Individual(s) involved would work with Dick Smith
to learn the ropes of the job, helping out with various projects along
the way, become familiar with our dealings with the National Office, and
hopefully, bring new ideas to help promote volleyball in our Region. Interested?
Contact me, or our Vice President
Karol Shadle, for more information.
The Board of Directors will be working to
improve our programs and chart a course for our Region's growth in the
future. Please accept this invitation to contact any one of our members
to offer your ideas for projects or development areas as we go forward.
The programs are for you, and we welcome your input.
The Chesapeake Region is saying goodbye, in
a sense, to one of our long-time members. Anne Higley has decided
to "hang up" her whistle and put away her (scorekeepers) pens. I
am sure it was a tough decision for Anne, but she is opting to pull back
from her involvement with volleyball to spend more time with her family.
Anne's gain is our loss. Anne has been a big contributor over the
years to our Officials programs. Her accomplishments include countless
scorekeeper and referee rating sessions, zillions of phone calls to schedule
candidates for ratings appointments at Fellowships, and reviewing 2.3 Bzillion
scoresheets. Anne lives in Delaware, and worked very hard to provide
convenient local clinics and rating sessions for people in that area of
our Region. Hopefully, someone else in the Delaware area will step
up to help fill that void in our program! Good Luck in your "retirement",
Anne, and many thanks for all your past contributions!
Another round of "thank-yous" to Nancy White.
Nancy has served on our Board of Directors and regrettably had to resign
due to "real life" commitments. Nancy is best known for the outstanding
job she has done in producing the DIGS for us over the past few years.
It has really helped our Region to get information communicated to our
members on a timely basis. Nancy will be passing her editing duties
to Theresa Curran. Thank you, Nancy, for all your hard work, and
good luck to Theresa as we go forward.
Karol Shadle deserves mention for the outstanding
job she did in organizing and running our Regional Championships.
More importantly, Karol has signed on again for another tenn as Vice President,
so she will be back next year with the benefit of learning the ropes this
year!
I am looking forward to the 1998/99 season and I encourage each
of you to participate in our region activities, whether it is as a player,
coach, official, tournament director or VOLUNTEER. Feel free to contact
me if I can assist you. Enjoy the summer and we hope to see you all
next season! |
