Regionals

Thanks to all who helped make the 1998 Chesapeake Regionals a success. We had a number of volunteer scorekeepers attend the various tournaments.  In all cases, the feedback was excellent.  The courts with nonplaying volunteer scorekeepers ran smoothly and efficiently.   Special thanks to:  Dave Paletz, Julie Briggs, Kelli Auletta, Laurie Mulford, Will Burkett, Gwen Sandford, Rick Constant, and Tom Sullivan.  If I missed anyone, my apologies.  Contact me and I will give you special billing next time!

I look forward to seeing more of you helping out at Regionals next year.

More Thank Yous

Most all of you do business every other year with Dixie Collins. She is in charge of Scorekeeper Recertification.  This is a HUGE job.  How big?  Dixie mails out and grades about 400 recert tests every year.  Then, she returns the scorekeeper cards to those who pass the test.  She also mails out letters to those whose certification has expired.  Finally, she gets all the "dog ate my homework" calls from those who haven't quite been able to stick to our normal schedule.  Again, this is a daunting task, and Dixie gets it done each year without fail.  THANK YOU, Dixie!

Scoresheet Review

Ann Higley did an outstanding job of chairing our Scoresheet Review Committee this season. From her report, we can see the most common errors:

  • Time of match written as "ASAP." (This is NEVER correct).  Use the tournament schedule to determine the time match scheduled.  Playoffs are scheduled one hour after last scheduled pool play match.  In a ten team tournament, this would mean semi-finals are scheduled at 7 PM and finals at 8 PM.

  •
  • Scorekeeper inadvertent errors "scribbled over."  These errors should be corrected with one plain and simple X through the incorrect information.

  •
  • The 15th point is often not circled (or squared) in the running score column, and the time of game finish is often not filled in. If you are unsure of the time, guess!

  •
  • New procedures for 1998:  individual sanctions (cards) ALWAYS record the score, NEVER record a reason.  This applies to both red and yellow cards.

  •
  • Include the work team name next to the scorekeeper's name at the bottom of the scoresheet. This is not in the rule book, but is a Region policy that was new for 1998.
     The purpose of reviewing the scoresheets is to;
  1. Identify basic technique errors and try to catch disasters in the making before they cost a team a close game.
  2.
  3. Identify teams utilizing non-certified scorekeeper.  We are looking for volunteers to review scoresheets again next year.  If you are interested in helping out, please contact me
Thank you to the members of this year's committee:  Azam Smith, Kelli Auletta, Gwen Sanford, Kevin Sippel, Tom Sullivan, Nellie Freeman and Karen Love.  We will be looking for a new committee chair for next season, due to Ann's retirement.  Please contact me if you are interested.

National News

We have two candidates heading to Tucson as National Scorekeeper candidates.  Best of luck to Gwen Sanford, who helped out at Nationals last year when we were desperate, and Kelli Auletta.

Scorekeepers interested in joining the ranks of the National Scorekeepers should make their intentions known to me, in writing between now and the first of January, 1999.  Be prepared to volunteer in the region for at least two seasons before being considered.  We need to see a continuous commitment to helping the program before sending candidates on to Nationals.  Also, if you are a referee looking to use this position as a stepping-stone to advancement as a referee, bear in mind that "scorekeeper-only" candidates will be given first priority when candidate selection time comes around.  The reason: the scorekeeper program needs the help that dedicated scorekeepers can provide AFTER they come back to the Region as National Scorekeepers.

Regional Scorekeepers need to have participated in at least two of these areas before being considered for National Scorekeeper candidacy:
  • Assist with certification/testing process
  • Help with candidate registration at fall clinics
  • Teach recertification clinics
  • Assist at new scorekeeper clinics
  • Assist the Fellowship Committee with scheduling candidates for ratings
  • Rate candidates at Fellowships
  • Serve on Scoresheet Review Committee
  • Volunteer to keep score at Regionals
As you can see, there is plenty to do, whether one is aspiring to be a National Scorekeeper or not!  We need volunteers!  We need people to help lighten the workload on each of us.  Please contact me via email, fax, mail or phone to lend a hand.  And thanks again to those who have helped in the past.
