My term as President of the CHRVA Board of
Directors has ended. I thoroughly enjoyed the job, and I will miss it.
I would have liked to continue, but my “real life” commitments wouldn’t
allow me to do the kind of job the Region deserves. So, I would like to
thank everyone who has supported me during the past two years, especially
the Board of Directors. Our new President is Karol Shadle, formerly Vice
President of the Board. I know Karol will do an outstanding job as President.
There are more changes afoot - At our recent
Board of Directors meeting, we appointed Anne Hughes as our Commissioner
for a two-year term. Anne has been an active volunteer in the Chesapeake
Region since, well, a long time ago, as a team representative, tournament
coordinator, division coordinator, eligibility chair and a member of the
Board of Directors. She ran the Washington Volleyball Club for ten years
during the time their men’s team competed at the open level at Nationals.
Anne is prepared to take over at the conclusion of this year’s annual meetings
at Nationals. She plans to come back from San Jose ready to help strengthen
our current programs and help create new ones to gain recognition and support
for CHRVA. Please welcome Anne and give her your support going forward.
Dick Smith has done an outstanding job as
our Commissioner for many, many years, and we are all very grateful to
him for his hard work on behalf of our Region. Dick’s tenure in various
positions in our region stretches back to the early 1970’s. He has served
as our Commissioner, a Board Member, Referee Chair, AAVO Treasurer, and
clinician to many, many referees and scorekeepers both here in the Chesapeake
Region, and around the world.
Dick has served in many capacities at the
National level as well, and has won a number of National level awards over
the years, including:
-
The George J. Fisher Leader in Volleyball Award, 1979, (named in honor
of the 1st President of USBVA)
-
The Doc Booth Commissioner’s Award, 1989, (named in honor of the 1st USVBA
Commissioner of Regions)
-
The E. Douglas Boyden Media Recognition Award, 1989, in recognition for
his work as editor of the USAV Guide and Rule book over a number of years.
-
The Glen Davies Referee Service Award, 1993.
We appreciate Dick’s past achievements, and we
look forward to his future contributions. All in all, Dick has been a driving
force in making our Region a great place to play volleyball, and we all
thank him for his tremendous dedication, hard work and a job well done.
For those who may be unclear of the division
of duties between the Commissioner and the Board President, the easy way
to remember it is the Commissioner is involved with day to day Regional
operations. As President, Karol will run the meetings of the Board of Directors.
She will also be the Chair of the Personnel Committee, whose task it is
to oversee the Commissioner.
The Board of Directors will be working to
improve our programs and chart a course for our Region’s growth in the
future. Please accept this invitation to contact any of our members to
offer your ideas for projects or development areas as we go forward. The
programs are for you, and we welcome your input. Here are some of the ideas
on the table:
-
tournament/event sponsorships,
-
revised adult tournament formats,
-
enhanced volunteer programs,
-
continued development of the Junior Programs, and for those on the other
end of the age spectrum,
-
development of Seniors and Age Group programs.
These are just some of the ideas that are being discussed as we move forward
under our new leadership team with Karol and Anne. There will be plenty
to do, so pick your area of interest and get involved!
Karol Shadle deserves mention for her second
year of organizing and running our Regional Championships. She was
tremendously prepared and organized, and did an outstanding job. Karol
has taken extensive notes, and has promised to pass them on to our NEW
Vice President, Joe Cornett, who will be heading up the Regionals project
next year. Thank you Karol, and good luck to Joe!
The 1998-99 season is ending, and we are preparing
for a new and more challenging season in 1999-2000. I encourage each
of you to participate in our region activities, whether it is as a player,
coach, official, tournament director or VOLUNTEER. Feel free to contact
any of the Board of Directors to ask questions, volunteer, or just express
your opinion. Enjoy the summer and we hope to see you all next season! |
