Congratulations to our Chesapeake Region Scorekeepers
for another season of keeping matches running smoothly. This has been a
difficult year for those of us in the administration of the scorekeeping
program. The changes in the scoresheet this year taxed our system, both
at the National and Regional levels. New scoresheet procedures and tests
were received late from the National Office, and that had a trickle-down
effect that impacted other areas of our program. My apologies to all who
had to wait to find out their official scorekeeper status this year. I’d
like to be able to say that all the changes are behind us now, and things
should be smooth from here on out, but as many of you have heard by now,
MORE changes and BIGGER changes are around the corner for USAV and CHRVA
Scorekeeping Programs!
As many of you have heard, there are substantial
changes on the horizon for the game of volleyball,
and in particular, “scorekeeping”. The implementation of all-rally
scoring will necessitate a new scoresheet at some point in the very near
future. No one can draw squares fast enough to keep up using our current
sheet! Some experiments have been done with modified versions of the International
scoresheet. This looks promising, and may be what is eventually used. The
final decisions on implementing a new system have not been made, but at
the Scorekeeper meetings in San Jose this May/June, a plan and a timetable
for implementing change will be developed. I suspect there will be a phase-in
period. I also believe we will have some folks trained in advance of the
regular schedule, so that we can implement a “train the trainer” type of
system. We will need a LOT of cooperation by everyone to pull this one
off!
Thank Yous
Most all of you do business every other year
with Dixie Collins. She is in charge of Scorekeeper Recertification. This
is a HUGE job. How big? Dixie mails out and grades about 400 recert
tests every year. Then, she returns the scorekeeper cards to those who
pass the test. She also mails out letters to those whose certification
has expired. Finally, she gets all the “dog ate my homework” calls from
those who haven’t quite been able to stick to our normal schedule. The
job requires lots of organization, accuracy and patience. Dixie has
done a super job over the years, and both Debbie Reed and I have depended
heavily on Dixie’s help with recertification. Many, many thanks, Dixie
for a superb job!
In the face of the massive re-training that
is ahead of us, Dixie’s talents will be re-directed. Her experience with
the International Scoresheet is a valuable commodity, and so she will be
assisting with other training efforts next season. Kelli Auletta will be
taking over as Recertification Assistant. Again, THANK YOU, DIXIE
for a job well-done for more years than I can remember.
Score Sheet Reviews
Azam Smith heads up our Regional Scoresheet
review committee. She is assisted by: Kelli Auletta, Nellie Freeman, Karen
Love, Gwen Sanford, Kevin Sippel and Tom Sullivan.
We are looking forward to Azam’s end of season
report. Look for feedback in upcoming issues.
Thanks to Azam and to all on the Scoresheet
Review Committee.
Other National News
Scorekeepers interested in joining the ranks
of the National Scorekeepers should make their intentions known to me,
in writing between now and January, 2000. Be prepared to volunteer in the
region for at least two seasons before being considered. We need to see
a continuous commitment to helping the program before sending candidates
on to Nationals. Also, if you are a referee looking to use this position
as a stepping-stone to advancement as a referee, bear in mind that “scorekeeper-only”
candidates will be given first priority when candidate selection time
comes around. The reason: the scorekeeper program needs the help that dedicated
scorekeepers can provide AFTER they come back to the Region as National
Scorekeepers.
Regional Scorekeepers need to have participated
in at least two of these areas before being considered for National Scorekeeper
candidacy:
-
Assist with certification /testing process
-
Help with candidate registration at fall clinics
-
Teach recertification clinics
-
Assist at new scorekeeper clinics
-
Assist the Fellowship Committee with scheduling candidates for ratings
-
Rate candidates at Fellowships
-
Serve on Scoresheet Review Committee
-
Volunteer to keep score at Regionals
As you can see, there is plenty to do, whether
one is aspiring to be a National Scorekeeper or not! We need volunteers!
We need people to help lighten the workload on each of us. Please contact
me via email, fax, mail or phone to lend a hand. And thanks again to those
who have helped in the past.
What we are about to face will require that
we all work together to help in the massive re-training effort. Details
on exactly WHAT we will have to do and WHEN we will have to do it are still
undetermined. Stay tuned! In the meantime, check the Officials
Web Page for the complete list of certified scorekeepers, and report
any discrepancies to me. Also, IF YOU ARE MOVING THIS SUMMER, OR IF
YOU HAVE MOVED IN THE LAST 2 YEARS, Please make sure you forward your
updated address to me ASAP, and hopefully no later than September 1, 1999.
Thanks! |
