YOO-HOO!  The 2003-2004 season is almost upon us. If you are reading this article to find out how to become a newly certified or continually certified scorekeeper, welcome! I am still here and glad you are reading this article to stay informed. If you let your certification lapse, and you keep score at a sanctioned tournament, you are jeopardizing the eligibility of your team and your referee rating. Everything you need to know should be here for you. Read and reread all the information and, if you still have questions, I’ll do my best to answer them. Call or email me.

Clinic and Attendance Policy
Policies on clinic attendance will be the same as last year. ADULT SCOREKEEPERS (Provisional and Regional ratings) MAY NOT ATTEND JUNIOR CLINICS FOR CERTIFICATION OR RECERTIFICATION. I do encourage junior age players to attend the October clinics and receive formal ratings in November. You must coordinate with existing or new referee clinics if you are a referee or referee candidate. We will be strictly adhering to the following clinic policy:

NOTE: Individuals who have not yet joined a team or who are unsure of their playing status for the coming year are encouraged to attend the October clinics. If you form a team later, you will already have a certified official. If you are looking for a team, you may be more "valuable" to a prospective team if you are certified. Don’t miss your opportunity to become certified!

See the clinic schedule listed on page 10 in the DIGS or the website for more information on clinic dates and times.

Scorekeeper List
The scorekeeper list can be found by accessing the links at www.vball-life.org/officials. Please check the officials website for verification of your certification and expiration dates. (If you attended a junior clinic, your name is not on this list.) Use this information to help decide which clinic you need to attend. If you have any doubt or question about your status, please contact me. Please note: consider this your written notification of what you need to do!!! Check the website over the coming weeks for updates.

Note to CHRVA Referees
It is a requirement in this Region that all referees, Provisional and above, be certified scorekeepers. Please make sure your certification is current. Many of the referees will not see their names on the current scorekeeper list. If your name is not there, it means that you need to recertify by attending a recertification clinic and taking the written test. You must take and pass the test this year with a score of 90% or better. If you are in doubt, check the website list or contact me for verification.

Address Changes
If any scorekeeper has moved or changed his or her name, please contact me immediately with the updated information. Unfortunately, the mailing lists for Region registration and scorekeepers are currently separate—so scorekeepers give me a heads-up. We waste a lot of time and postage sending out mail that comes back with the infamous FOE stamped all over it. Also, allowing your certification to lapse because you failed to update your address will mean that you must start all over again as a candidate!

Scorekeeping Changes for 2003-2004
Thankfully, there are no changes to the scoresheet this year.

Volunteer List
I would like to thank those who volunteered to help with the scorekeeping program last year, and we will need lots of help again. Please email me with your contact information and let me know what you are interested in doing to help out. If you have sent information before, please do so again, so the information can get to me. Kelli Auletta and Julie Briggs are busy setting up fellowship tournaments to be held in November. If you are interested in rating, please contact Kelli or Julie with your availability at kelli.auletta@chrva.org or julie.briggs@chrva.org. If many people volunteer, the workload for all will be more manageable. Thanks in advance.

Scoresheet Review
If you reviewed scoresheets in the past and want to again, let me know. If you haven’t and want to, I’d love to have you on board.

National News
US Open Championships will be held in Atlanta, Georgia in May 2004. We will be looking for scorekeepers to move up to a National rating. Those interested in becoming a National Scorekeeper must not only prove their competence through keeping score during matches but must also show their commitment to the Region's Scorekeeping Program by serving on the Rating Team and serving as a non-playing scorekeeper at the Regional Championships or other volunteer position. Requirements are listed below.

Junior Olympic Volleyball Championships
There are changes being made at the Junior level Nationally. Within the next two years, it is expected that the Girls and Boys JOV Championships will be fully staffed with certified scorekeepers. It is believed that there will not be enough National or Junior National Scorekeepers available, and they will be asking for Regional recommendations. I have been working these tournaments for 13 years and can definitely tell you how rewarding and fun they are to attend. Perhaps you would like this to be a goal of yours. If interested, let me know. There will be payment available for working.

National Scorekeeper Requirements
In order to remain “in good standing,” National Scorekeepers in the Chesapeake Region must assist the program by actively participating in at least two of the following each year. STRONG emphasis is placed on teaching the clinics. We REALLY need our most experienced scorekeepers sharing their experience with our candidates and regional upgrades.

• Teach recertification clinics (mid-day weekend or evening sessions in October / November)
• Teach new scorekeeper clinics (1/2 day sessions on weekends in October)
• Teach junior scorekeeper clinics (1/2 day sessions on weekends in December and January)
• Assist with certification/testing process
• Assist the Fellowship Committee with scheduling candidates for ratings
• Rate candidates at Fellowships
• Serve on Scoresheet Review Committee
• Volunteer to keep score at Regionals
Each National Scorekeeper is to contact me by September 15, 2003 with information on how they will assist our Regional program.

Yes, there is a LOT going on, and we ask all of you to do your best to help out! Watch for future issues of the DIGS and check the CHRVA website for updates. GOOD LUCK in the coming season!

CONGRATULATIONS!
I would like to congratulate our newest National Scorekeeper, Lynette Muller. Lynette attended the US Open National Championships in Minneapolis, Minnesota. She did a great job, and we are glad to add another hard worker to the family. When you see her, be sure to give her a big CONGRATS!
