Changes to the Half-Day Tourney Format

You talk…we listen! Three years ago, you told the CHRVA Board of Directors that, as adults, you needed some tournament options that didn’t use up your entire day. Last season, we developed the Half-day Tournament. We asked many of you if you liked this new format and what we could do to improve it. While many liked a shorter day, some said that it was too far to travel for only two matches. Some felt that not enough points were awarded for their efforts. Others didn’t like that there was no break for teams. All teams were either working or playing at all times, so even though it was a shorter day, it still felt long. We can’t do much about the tournament locations or how far you travel, but we did make a few changes to allow for more matches, more points, and breaks for all teams, while still maintaining the short day.

Half-day Tournaments will now consist of two pools of four teams each. The playing schedule will be the same as a regular four-team pool, except that teams will play matches of two games to 21 points against each of the teams in the pool. Instead of two matches, you will play three. Because we are using the standard four-team pool schedule, every team will have one match where they are not required to work or play. Despite these schedule changes and the addition of two more teams to the tournament, this format can still run in four to five hours.

The best part is that the points have been revised. Like the previous Half-day format, only the top team from each pool will advance to the championship playoff. However, the two teams who finish second in their respective pools will each take home one point. This is a welcome change from last year. Also, the champion team will now be awarded five points, and the second place team will earn three points.

Finally, for those of you who might be interested in hosting a Half-day tournament, the three-team pool format and schedule will still be available as an option for any tournament that does not fill with eight teams. Previously, the Half-day tournament could not run unless both pools were full. You should also note that an AAVO official will be assigned to your event if you have seven or more teams participating. If you would like more information on hosting a Half-day Tournament, please contact the CHRVA Adult Tournament Chair, Ron Sommer, at ron.sommer@chrva.org.

Special thanks to Karen Love and Chris Cant for participating in the task force that developed the changes to the Half-day format.
