Welcome to the 1998-99 Season! In this issue of the Digs, you will find all the information you need to certify or recertify as a referee or scorekeeper.  I encourage as many of you as possible to sign up, and ease the burden on your teammates in the coming season.  The Board of Directors met over the summer to appoint
committee chairs, and prepare for the upcoming season.  The Staff and Committee appointments made at our meeting are as follows:

Finance Committee Chair: Eugene Yee
Appeals Committee Chair: Dixie Collins
Eligibility Committee Chair: Eugene Yee
Communications Committee Chair: Jeff Maynard
Personnel Committee: Dean Shumway
Personnel Committee: Shang Hsiung
I would like to take a moment to thank R.D. Randall who retired from the Board of Directors this year.  R.D. served most recently as our Eligibility Chair. We will miss his input at our meetings, and we thank him for his years of hard work on our Board.  I am very impressed with the work that Jeff Maynard and Charles Ezigbo have done on our Region and Officials Web sites.  For those of you who have web access, please use these sites to get up to date information on what is happening in our Region.  There is a lot happening here, and that is one easy way we can keep the lines of communication open. Look for the web site addresses elsewhere in this issue.

And speaking of communication, I receive calls and emails from time to time about various problems or issues that people have come across. Many of those items I refer immediately to our Commissioner, Dick Smith. It isn’t that I am trying to dodge any bullets, it’s just that in my role as President, I am not directly
responsible for day to day Region operations. That’s Dick’s job.  As chair of the Personnel Committee, though, I am in effect one of Dick’s bosses. So, if there is an issue that you are having trouble getting resolved, feel free to copy me in on the letter or email, and I will help follow up. Fortunately for me, Dick is very diligent in handling most issues, so the need for me to follow up has been limited.

As always, we are looking for people who are interested in helping out with the various Region programs. We have all kinds of things for people to help out with. Register people at our referee and scorekeeper clinics, or help run an AAVO Fellowship tournment, be a tournament director at Regionals – there are lots of possibilites!  Some don’t even involve having to leave your house! How about volunteering to take appointment calls for a Fellowship, or helping to review scoresheets, or grade scorekeeper tests? Call the appropriate program chair and offer your help. We’d appreciate it!

Volleyball is undergoing a number of changes, and we will start to see some of them shortly. First, we have a revised scoresheet to become familiar with, and soon we may be experimenting with new scoring systems for games. The rules are always being updated, and hopefully all these things will help to make our sport more exciting, fun to watch and fun to play.  Good luck in the coming season!
