Commissioner’s Corner
by Anne Hughes
This will be the first time I have written in the capacity of Commissioner so I will try to give you a brief introduction. My name is Anne Hughes and many of you have known me as the Men’s A-AA coordinator, but some of you might remember me as Eligibility Chairman, or as a fill in for the Scheduling Chairman, Ron Sommer, when he went to serve in Desert Storm, and last but not least as “Mom” from the days of the Washington Volleyball Club.

As we approach the new millennium preparations are underway for the indoor season. Those of you who need to recertify as Referees or Scorekeepers will be able to do so at various clinics throughout the fall.  Please look for the listings and times in this issue of the Digs. If all else fails and you do not get your copy of the Digs you may certainly call me or any of the Board Members and we will be glad to help you. Also in this issue we have listed the names and numbers of several new coordinators that are going to be working for you this season.

The Region is planning to support Age Bracket competition this year by offering half day tournaments for conglomerate teams. It is in the planning stage at this moment but by the time you read this we hope all will be in place.

My congratulations to Glenn Reid and Diane Zabetakis as both have been invited to attend the National Championships next year to certify as candidates for National Referee.

Finally congratulations to all the teams that went to the National Championship this year and special kudos to No Mo Locos for finishing second in the Men’s A Gold Division, PineRidge for finishing first in the Men’s B Silver Division, and Mental Pause for finishing second in the Men’s B Silver Division.  Selected to the All Tournament Team from No Mo Locos were Michael Branson and Michael Osinski.

In the Seniors Championship in the Gold Division Mid Atlantic VBC Men’s 55 and over from Rockville, MD, finished third while Women’s SWVC 55 (pictured on page 14) from Silver Spring, MD, finished third in the Gold Division. Men’s 60 and over had as the third place winner Mac Attack from Silver Spring, MD.  Men’s 65 and over Gold Renegades from Columbia, MD, won the Gold Division, while Men’s 70 and over team from Mid Atlantic Volleyball Club from Rockville, MD won the Gold Division.

On the All-Tournament Team for Men’s 65 and over the most valuable player award went to Dean Shumway, with Hans Sammer, Bob Quackenbush and Jake Barkdoll taking honors also for Mac 65 Gold Renegades.

The All-Tournament Team for Men’s 70’s honors went to Gene Chambliss from Mid Atlantic Volleyball Club selected as the Most Valuable Player, with the rest of the honors going to Charles Campbell, Don Clinton, and Chuck Welsh.

This Region had a magnificent showing and we are very proud for the honors you have given this Region.

If I have left anyone out please call me and we will get your team or player in the next addition of the Digs. I am looking forward to seeing as many of you as I can during the season.
