This is my first article
as President of the Board of Directors for the Chesapeake Region, so I
thought a good way to introduce myself was to share with you some of my
goals for the next two years. Foremost on my list is to look at the services
we provide to our membership and see where we can improve. The first step
is to revisit the Chesapeake Region’s mission, which taken verbatim from
our current by-laws, is the following:
-
To teach the sport of volleyball to children and adults by holding clinics
conducted by qualified instructors in schools, playgrounds, parks and other
suitable facilities;
-
To provide practice volleyball sessions, classroom lectures, seminars and
panel discussions in which trainees may be schooled in competitive coaching,
playing, officiating and scouting techniques;
-
To foster and conduct area, regional, state and national amateur volleyball
competitions;
-
To act as the official representative of the United States Volleyball Association
within the area designated as the Chesapeake Region;
-
To select and train suitable candidates in the techniques of volleyball
in national and international competition and thereby assist in improving
the caliber of candidates representing the United States in Olympic, Pan
American, World Games, and other international competitions; and,
-
To foster and conduct amateur volleyball programs between the United States
and foreign nations for the exchange and training of suitable candidates
in the techniques and practices of volleyball in countries other than their
own.
This mission statement was developed several years
ago, and while we have focused on many of the above areas and have done
so quite successfully, I feel there are a few areas that need to be updated
or refined. To that end, the Board of Directors and other key personnel
within the region will be meeting on September 19th for a Strategic Planning
Meeting. During this daylong session, we will be addressing new programs,
improvements in current programs, and consequently, come up with a Tactical
Plan to share with you. Once we have this Tactical Plan written, we will
need your feedback. This plan will be available to all on our web site
and we will have an area where you can send us your comments, ideas or
suggestions. In future articles I will discuss where we are in our mission,
where we want to be, and how we are going to get there.
Secondly, I want to continue with the previous
administration’s goal of increasing our volunteer base. As we’ve stated
before, there are many ways you can get involved – as a player, a coach,
a referee, a scorekeeper, a member of the Board of Directors, etc.
In every issue of the DIGS, you can find a listing of the Board of Directors
and the CHRVA Staff. Our phone and fax numbers are listed, as well as our
e-mail addresses.
In closing, I’d like to challenge all of you
to help implement our mission. Let us hear from you – get involved. As
your elected officials and appointed staff, we are here to serve and represent
YOU!
