Change in Board of Director Election Process
On July 13, 2000, a questionnaire
was distributed by email and regular mail to the players, coaches, scorekeepers,
and the other volleyball “fans, enthusiasts, fanatics, and supporters”
in the Chesapeake region. One of the questions addressed the current voting
process for the election of the Board of Directors. Over 400 responses
were received and analyzed. In the past, members of the Board of Directors
have been elected by the individuals who attend the annual membership meeting.
The number of persons who attend the annual membership meeting has historically
been small, and the Board wanted to consider options that would increase
participation.
The survey responses indicated a strong interest
in having an option for regular mail or email voting. About 75% voted for
a (regular) mail and/or email process, while just 25% voted to keep the
current process.
During the July 2001 Board of Directors meeting,
the results of the survey were discussed as well as the voting procedures
used by other Regions, the costs of alternative voting processes, and the
importance of increasing member participation while assuring a fair and
honest election. The Board decided to move to a mail-in ballot as an initial
step, with the option of email balloting to be considered in the future.
Appropriate changes were made to the Bylaws.
This copy of the DIGS initiates the new voting
process by soliciting candidates for the Board. It is an opportunity to
contribute to the development and expansion of your favorite sport. The
plan is to include a mail-in ballot in the spring issue of the DIGS. This
will allow time for the ballots to be returned and counted and for the
results to be announced at the general membership meeting in May 2002.
Please read the “Call for Nominations”
for further instructions.
