Remembering a Friend
---- Christine Rogewitz
I know many of us have memories to share of Jo Ann Peters, but I’ll bet I’m the only one who got stuck in that big ditch in her front yard! There she was at 2:00 a.m. calling a tow truck for me after having worked a long tournament in Richmond.

I became a referee when Jo Ann was Recreation Commissioner. I was one of those “deer in the headlights” types, basically clueless as to what I was doing. Had it not been for Jo Ann’s kind, approachable manner, I would have quit after my first season.

Once when I was having trouble with a recreation assignment and was looking for guidance, Jo Ann offered to come observe me on the stand and offer feedback. Regrettably, I realized I had just admitted to my “boss” that I couldn’t handle the job to which she’d assigned me! Wishing I had stuck my foot in my mouth rather than opening it, I asked her if she’d fire me for doing a poor job. I can still hear her reassuring voice saying “Don’t worry. I’m here to help not criticize.”

After that, it was all over for poor Jo Ann! She immediately gained my loyalty; but, unfortunately for her, with it came the dozens upon dozens of questions that I needed answered. She had the patience of a saint!

Now that I’m the High School Commissioner, I remember her patience and kindness in mentoring me. I try to follow her example with the new officials I recruit. We all have to start somewhere.

Jo Ann was warm and kind-hearted. Her “love of the sport” was genuine, but her love for the people in volleyball was stronger, especially for the younger players. She was never anything less than a friend to me. I only hope that I took every opportunity to return her kindness and show her my gratitude while she was still here.

In an effort to benefit her grandson, Neil, we are establishing the Jo Ann Peters Memorial Fund. Many of us know Neil, the little boy who rarely left her side. He used to call her “Mama Jo.” We can only imagine the loss he must feel. If you’d like to contribute to the fund, please make checks payable to: Jo Ann Peters Memorial Fund.  Mail to:
