The Men's National Sitting Volleyball Team
attended the World Championships in Cairo, Egypt September 24 through October
3, 2002.
The temperature was hot,
hot, hot. The Team managed to take advantage of some of the sights
during the off time. A day trip up to Alexandria was rewarding.
They scrimmaged a local club team and then were treated to a lavish luncheon
and a visit to the Mediterranean Sea. They went to the Pyramids at
Giza, rode the camels and burros, and took advantage of the many photo
opportunities.
The team finished 10th.
Although the finish was not as high as hoped for, the team is much improved.
Of the 10 players in attendance, four had never competed in the Sitting
competition, and two of those had never played in an International competition.
They caught on quick, and we could see improvement in their movement and
adaptability to the sitting game. We beat Morocco in a five game
match only to turn around and lose to them in another five game match when
we needed the win to place.
Though the challenges
of the language barrier, not enough water, not enough transportation, no
Internet access, no laundry, no disabled accessibility, and stomach flus
were frustrating, the experience gained on the court was immeasurable.
Next up for the Sittting
team is a training and tryout in February 2003. Anyone who is
disabled and would be interested in trying out can contact Bill Hamiter,
