How Junior Girl’s Seeding Indexing Works
Charles Ezigbo, Junior Girl's Program Director
The purpose of the Seeding Index in Junior Girl’s competition is to provide a relative strength order of teams to create balanced pools for tournament competition.  Snake seeding across pools using the Seeding Index order is used in CHRVA Junior Girls tournaments.  Tournament coordinators use their best judgment when seeding early in the season until teams get a seeding index value from playing.

The Seeding Index is calculated by multiplying each team’s game (not tournament or match) win percentage times the average games won percentage of their opponents.  Since the strongest teams can be expected to have the highest win percentage against the strongest competition, the seeding index value for each team provides a quantitative team performance metric that can be used for seeding purposes.  The larger the seeding index value, the better the team.

The Seeding Index will be calculated both for single age groups with only single age competition used and for the typical mixed 13/14, 15/16 and 17/18 groups where the results of both age groups are combined.  The Juniors website will have each team code, team name, club name, and seeding index value in rank order from highest to lowest for each single and combined age group.  The Seeding Index will be updated periodically (weekly or so) depending on frequency of tournaments being held in any one age group and receipt of results from the tournament hosts.

Results reporting of pool and tournament finish for CHRVA tournaments is available in another area of the junior website.  More detailed data such as win percentage, number of games played, and team codes of all teams is collected in the results database.  Individual team or club requests for more detailed information than is being put on the web for this season will be honored on a time available basis only.  Teams planning to compete in major out of Region tournaments like the Early Bird, National Qualifiers, and East Coast Championships where detailed results reporting of all your competition (not just against CHRVA teams) is required for seeding need to keep their own records for that purpose.  As time goes on and customer demand is balanced versus resources to satisfy it, more information will likely be displayed in future web improvements each season.

So exactly which results are counted?

For the 2003 Season, only game results between CHRVA teams playing in CHRVA sanctioned tournaments held within CHRVA Region geographical boundaries will be used for the Seeding Index for CHRVA tournaments.

  • Each individual game is counted (not match or tournament results), and all games are considered equal.  Total points or length of game doesn’t matter; point differential or whether pool or playoff doesn’t matter.

  •
  • Forfeits are not counted.

  •
  • Games against out-of-Region teams are not counted.

  •
  • Scrimmage or Fellowship tournaments are not counted (and they don’t count as play dates either).
