Still Hooked on Volleyball

There is an advantage to being over 50.  You get to play in senior tournaments!  In October, several teams from the area traveled all the way to Utah to compete in the Huntsman World Senior Games.  The volleyball event there has grown so much in the last few years that they now divide the playing times in odd and even five-year age brackets.  The new format actually allows individuals to play in two brackets if they’re up for it, as many do at the U.S. Open Championships.  The only disadvantages to this are you may not get to see your younger or older teams play, and you may not be able to hang out together as much.  This could present some problems if your spouse is playing…at a different time!  While none of our women’s teams medalled at the competition this year, we all had a lot of fun.  Senior athletes in all sports boosted the economy of St. George by $30 million!

On November 15, the ladies from Delaware hosted a tournament of eight teams, aged 50 and up, from Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and, of course, Delaware.  Everyone played every other team regardless of age, and points were given for differences in age.  The opportunities for older members to play are growing.  Please don’t hesitate to contact me for further information about these types of tournaments.  I can also help individuals identify teams in the area who may need players.  Hope to see you on the court!
