The 1998-99 Season is underway! We have several
exciting announcements to make regarding some of our members.
First of all, we must congratulate SHANG HSIUNG
who has been honored by USA Volleyball as the Developmental Coach of the
Year. This very prestigious award recognizes Shang’s contributions over
the past 13+ years as an effective leader in the development of the sport
of volleyball.
Many in our Region are familiar with Shang,
as he has been prominently involved with the Maryland Junior Boys Volleyball
Program and the head coach of the men’s volleyball club team at the University
of Maryland. The Maryland Club Teams have been extremely successful over
the years. Their accomplishments include: EIVA Club Champions 1985-1988,
1990, and 1994-1997, ACC Champions from 1989 to 1994 and NCAA Club Champions
in 1996.
As a major force behind the development of
Junior and Adult volleyball programs, Shang has conducted camps, clinics,
and has organized countless volleyball tournaments. We are fortunate to
have Shang as a member of our Board of Directors in the Chesapeake Region.
He also holds the positions of EIVA Men’s Club Volleyball Commissioner
and Youth and Junior Olympic Division representative for the Atlantic South
Zone.
Shang is also a member of USA Volleyball’s
Coaching Cadre, which is a specially selected group of successful certified
individuals who teach and guide volleyball coaches within the USA Coaching
Accreditation Program (CAP).
Congratulations to Shang for this well-deserved
recognition and award! We wish him well in the coming season.
Another Region member has been selected to
serve as a Player Representative for the National Championship Division.
Congratulations to Alice Gross! Caren Kemner, Chair of Players Advisory
Council appointed Alice Gross to the position of Player Representative,
representing players to the US Club Tournaments, to the Administrative
Council of the National Championship Division.
As one of four player representatives for
the USA Open Event, and one of seven players nationwide, she will have
voice and vote in the NCD Administrative Council and division meetings,
and will be consulted throughout the year on relevant issues.
Joe Sharpless, NCD Vice President, has indicated
this is an attempt to get the players’ voices heard at the top level of
the division. It is great to have a member of the Chesapeake Region
representing players and filling this national position.
Another note about the National Championship
Division. Its Vice President is our very own Joe Sharpless, whose volleyball
background is long and storied. Joe has shared some additional information
about this year’s Nationals in San Jose, CA. An Event Intern program
will be re-instituted for the USA Open Event in San Jose. The EIP provides
an opportunity for persons to serve an internship in one of four responsibilities:
As the Administrative Assistant to the Asst Vice President, as a member
of Championship, Computer or Equipment Committee. USA Volleyball will provide
the successful interns with per diem for all days assigned to work. Additionally
the intern will receive staff uniforms, which are theirs to keep at the
conclusion of the event. USA Volleyball will make every effort to provide
rooms through the hotels’ comp room program, if enough rooms are available.
The intern will be responsible for their own travel and incidentals.
This is an excellent opportunity for persons
to become involved with the national championship program, to enhance their
personal experiences, and to share their experiences with the Region. Interested
parties should contact Commissioner Dick Smith for more information.
Mr. Sharpless also reports that there is an
effort to revise the Mixed Six Championships. The event is in the planning
stage, but the current plan has the tournament in March 1999 in Las Vegas.
Additional information on this event will be available through Dick Smith
as well.
And finally a BIG thank you to Joe Sharpless
for keeping me in touch with what is going on out there, and helping to
write my articles!
There are lots of things changing and going
on in the Chesapeake Region! Keep in touch by checking out our web site
at http://www.chrva.org/index.html.
Thanks to Jeff Maynard for the continual improvements to our communications,
including the web site.
And let’s not forget Charles Ezigbo has done
nationally acclaimed work on a web site for CHRVA Officials. Take a look
at it! http://www.erols.com./chezi/officials/home_page.htm.
Best of luck to all of you in the coming season!
