Chair, Tournament Scheduling Committee Ron has been a USAV (formerly USVBA) member since 1972. He has managed the Middle River Volleyball Club for almost 30 years. Not only has he served as a manager of this local club, but he loves to coach as well. His various coaching stints over the last 24 years include: Assistant Women’s Volleyball Coach at NCAA Division 1 Towson State University in 1988; Head Women’s Coach (1983) and Assistant Coach (1981 and 1982) at NJCAA Division Dundalk Community College; Player-Coach Men’s Middle River Club team from 1975 - 1981; and Coach of Middle River Women’s AA, A, BB, and B teams from 1981 to the present. Ron received his FIVB Stage II and USVBA Level II coaching certification at the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, Washington in 1981. He obtained his USA Volleyball Level 1 certification at the University of Maryland in College Park in 1994. In addition, Ron served as chair of the CHRVA Coaches Development Program from approximately 1981 to 1985. Many coaches have benefited from his experience over the years. From 1982 until 1987, he has also conducted Volleyball Coaching clinics in Baltimore as Head Instructor and conducted Players Clinics as Head Instructor for two years in the early 1990s. Doing his part to ensure the growth of the sport, Ron assisted at many JOV development camps from 1978 to 1980. Ron has worked tirelessly to contribute to the Region’s activities over the years. He was Digs Editor for approximately six years (1980-1986). As you can see, he currently devotes much of his time to being Chairman of the Tournament Scheduling Committee. Since the program’s inception in the 1984-85 season, he has ensured the Region has one of the most efficiently run scheduling processes around. Feel free to contact him at any time for guidance on hosting tournaments (see POC listing in the back of this issue for numbers). He will steer you down the right path to running a successful event! |
JoBeth
Killough
Men’s AA and A Division Tournament Coordinator JoBeth has been playing volleyball for over 20 years and has concentrated on the sport more intensely since moving to Virginia from New Mexico/Texas in 1989. She is a setter and prior scorekeeper/referee who began her USAV career playing on various teams until organizing her own team in the early 1990’s. Several years ago, she took over the position of Women’s A Division Tournament Coordinator and, beginning in 1999, moved into the position of Men’s AA and A Division Tournament Coordinator which she thoroughly enjoys. In May 2000, JoBeth was re-elected to the CHRVA Board of Directors for her third 2-year term and was appointed to the position of Eligibility Chair. During her past two terms, she served as the CHRVA Secretary. JoBeth also enjoys traveling, rock concerts/live bands, outdoor doubles tournaments, attending sporting events, playing pool/darts, and spending time with her dog. |
Trish
Marcario
Men's BB Coordinator Trish has been playing volleyball in the Chesapeake Region for 18 years as an outside hitter and setter. She has been the Men’s BB Coordinator for the last two years and plans on continuing thanks to the great team reps and support from the Coordinator division. Other than volleyball, she enjoys SCUBA diving, traveling, and shooting (sporting clays, not critters). Her real job is a property manager for homeowner’s associations. |
Jean
Goodacre
Women’s A Coordinator The 2000-2001 season will mark Jean’s second year as the Women’s A Coordinator and her first year as the Women’s AA Coordinator. Jean started playing volleyball in the region 11 years ago, initially playing in various sixes leagues as well as outdoor grass and beach doubles tournaments. She has played USAV on and off the last 10 years at the Women’s BB and A levels. Jean also maintains the CHRVA Tournament Directions Webpage and helps administer the Division Coordinator Webpages. Other hobbies include working on Apple computers, web design, and being a Mom. She also volunteers at her son’s school, maintaining the students’ computer lab. Jean works as a mathematician in submarine design at the David Taylor Model Basin in Bethesda, Maryland. She is married to Russ and has two children Russell, age 4, and Hannah born in February. After taking the last USAV season off while awaiting the birth of her daughter, she looks forward to returning to the volleyball court this fall. |
Kevin
Sippel
Men’s B Coordinator Kevin began playing walleyball and volleyball in 1987, after abandoning tennis as his primary sport, due to the development of chronic tennis elbow. His avid interest in volleyball soon led him to start a recreation league in his community and to become a certified official in 1988. Besides officiating at USAV tournaments, Kevin also referees collegiate matches for NCAA Division I, II, and III schools in Maryland and surrounding states. Having served four years on the CHRVA Board of Directors, Kevin is also a past president of the Region. He is a member of the Tournament and Ombudsman Committees, and he has contributed significantly to the revision of the CHRVA handbook and bylaws. Interests outside of volleyball include skiing, racquetball, squash, and swimming. He helps raise funds for the Kidney Foundation by playing in VolleyBaltimore and for the March of Dimes by swimming across the Chesapeake Bay. |
Women’s BB and B Coordinator Julie Briggs will be handling the Women’s BB and B tournament coordination. Some of you know her as last year’s Womens AA Division coordinator, although most of you know her as a referee, scorekeeper candidate rater, and from around the courts. She is also the Director of Milkshake Madness Volleyball, a “Just for Fun” series of outdoor “grab bag” tournaments. Julie has only been playing volleyball for the past eight years; but, once she decided that she liked it, there was no holding her back--she almost literally jumped in with both feet! Julie will also be the contact for ALL divisions for fellowship information this coming season. |
