Ron
Sommer
Chair, Tournament Scheduling Committee Ron has been a USAV (formerly USVBA) member since 1972. He has managed the Middle River Volleyball Club for almost 30 years. Not only has he served as a manager of this local club, but he loves to coach as well. His various coaching stints over the last 25 years include: Assistant Women’s Volleyball Coach at NCAA Division 1 Towson State University in 1988; Head Women’s Coach (1983) and Assistant Coach (1981 and 1982) at NJCAA Division Dundalk Community College; Player-Coach Men’s Middle River Club team from 1975 - 1981; and Coach of Middle River Women’s AA, A, BB, and B teams from 1981 to the present. Ron received his FIVB Stage II and USVBA Level II coaching certification at the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, Washington in 1981. He obtained his USA Volleyball Level 1 certification at the University of Maryland in College Park in 1994. In addition, Ron served as chair of the CHRVA Coaches Development Program from approximately 1981 to 1985. Many coaches have benefited from his experience over the years. From 1982 until 1987, he has also conducted Volleyball Coaching clinics in Baltimore as Head Instructor and conducted Players Clinics as Head Instructor for two years in the early 1990s. Doing his part to ensure the growth of the sport, Ron assisted at many JOV development camps from 1978 to 1980. Ron has worked tirelessly to contribute to the Region’s activities over the years. He was Digs Editor for approximately six years (1980-1986). As you can see, he currently devotes much of his time to being Chairman of the Tournament Scheduling Committee. Since the program’s inception in the 1984-85 season, he has ensured the Region has one of the most efficiently run scheduling processes around. Feel free to contact him at any time for guidance on hosting tournaments (see POC listing in the back of this issue for numbers). He will steer you down the right path to running a successful event! |

Trish
Marcario
Men’s AA and A Coordinator Men's BB and B Coordinator Trish has been playing volleyball in the Chesapeake Region for 20 years as an outside hitter and setter. She has been the Men’s BB and B Coordinator for the last three years and plans on continuing thanks to the great team reps and support from the Coordinator division. This year Trish is also taking on the duties of the Men's AA and A Coordinator. Other than volleyball, she enjoys SCUBA diving, traveling, and shooting (sporting clays, not critters). Her real job is a property manager for homeowner’s associations. |
Jean
Goodacre
Women’s AA and A Coordinator The 2002-2003 season will mark Jean’s fourth year as the Women’s A Coordinator and her third year as the Women’s AA Coordinator. Jean started playing volleyball in the region 13 years ago, initially playing in various sixes leagues as well as outdoor grass and beach doubles tournaments. She has played USAV on and off the last 12 years at the Women’s BB and A levels. Jean also maintains the CHRVA Tournament Directions Webpage and helps administer the Division Coordinator Webpages. Other hobbies include working on Apple computers, web design, and being a Mom. She also volunteers at her son’s school, maintaining the students’ computer lab. Jean works as a mathematician in submarine design at the David Taylor Model Basin in Bethesda, Maryland. She is married to Russ and has two children Russell, age 6, and Hannah, age 2. |
Karen
Love
Women’s BB and B Coordinator After a two year break from being a coordinator, Karen is returning to her previous position as Womens' B/BB Coordinator. Things are different now, as Karen and her husband Terry have two little helpers, Ryan (age 4) and Megan (age 2). Karen's been playing volleyball for 13 years and attributes it all to Jeff Stuart and Gaithersburg's recreation play. Since then, it's been coed and women's leagues, indoor and outdoor, and even some refereeing. In the summertime, Karen runs her own grass doubles league. During the day, Karen is an actuary in DC, but at night she is family and volleyball. Karen looks forward to years of playing beach doubles with her kids. |
